Job Title: Nurse Technician

Department: Nursing

Job Summary: To assist the professional nurse and other nursing personnel in the completion of patient care tasks and providing patient care needs as outlined by the nurse in charge of each patient. Assures that they follow instructions as they have been trained and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the hospital. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Class I.

Job Qualifications: A. Education: High School Graduate preferred.

B. Personal Job-Related Skills: Ability to read and write desirable and the ability to comprehend and follow verbal or written instructions.

C. Licensure, Registry or Certification: BLS certification required.

D. Experience: 1. Prior Work Experience: One year experience in a medical setting preferred.

2. Technical Training: CNA preferred.

E. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Pushing and pulling with 50 pounds force while assisting patients or moving equipment. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may become weak or helpless. Must submit to post offer substance abuse testing (drug screening).

Revised 03/01/2015 Essential Duties and Responsibilities A. Assures that every effort is made to give quality assistance.

B. Performs personal care for patients including bathing, toileting and feeding. Provides respect due to each patient, family, and co-workers.

C. Assists and reports as needed. Recognizes and intervenes appropriately in life threatening situations.

D. Performs vital signs accurately, records intake and output, weighs patient using bed, wheelchair or standing scale and documents appropriately, accurately and timely. Informs nurse immediately of any notable changes in patient.

E. Makes rounds on patients making sure they are turned and kept clean and dry. Keeps rooms clean and free of clutter and trash at all times. Essential Duties and Responsibilities specific to WTBHU:

A. Patient Care

1. Under the direction of the RN, performs the following patient care activities:

1.a.Assists the assigned patients in activities of daily living.

1.b. Assists patients in maintenance of their environment, as required.

1.c.Participates in planning and implementing daily activities for patients.

1.d. Monitors the patients’ attendance in WTBHU activities and treatment modalities.

1.e.Interacts with patients on a one-to-one basis in a therapeutic manner.

1.f. Reports relevant patient information to the RN for evaluation, intervention, and documentation.

1.g. Monitors the patient during use of potentially hazardous equipment.

1.h. Performs patient vital signs, both manual and electronic.

Revised 03/01/2015 1.i. Records patient vital signs, intake and output, group participation, and maintains close monitoring checklist.

1.j. Performs other tasks and patient care as assigned by RN.

2. Assists in the admission process of the patient which includes the inspection and proper care of all patients’ clothing and property, orientation of the patient to the Unit and program.

3. Assists, as necessary, with WTBHU seminars, occupational, and recreational activities and patient community meetings.

4. Participates in multidisciplinary treatment staffing.

5. Monitors the safety of the therapeutic milieu.

6. Assists in the management of the aggressive/assaultive patient. Successful completion of Crisis Intervention Training is required to perform this function.

Other Significant Requirements: A. Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.

B. Maintains a positive attitude while working with patients.

C. Utilizes aseptic procedures and maintains aseptic precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.

D. Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.

E. Reports to work on time, maintains professionalism at all times, and performs duties with minimal supervision.

F. Interacts with patients, family members, Medical Staff members, and other department personnel with a respectful attitude and promotes a cooperative manner.

G. Adheres to Administrative policies regarding attendance and performance.
