CENTRE LEARNING COMMUNITY CHARTER SCHOOL ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHER DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: The ESL teacher supports students as they construct meaning in reading. As a self-directed member of CLCCS, the ESL teacher provides services to administrators, counselors, teachers, and parents. In addition, the ESL teacher uses both informal and standardized measures to diagnose the strengths and needs of individual students and/or groups of students. The ESL teacher teaches basic and developmental English as a Second Language. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of CLCCS goals and guidelines and current professional research in order to coordinate and evaluate all ESL services. Thorough knowledge of educational process; background in content area desirable.  Ability to assume responsibility as approved by the school leaders (i.e., Head Teacher, Lead teachers, counselors) in initiating and providing ESL services that are consistent with the needs of all students.  Ability to articulate an ESL program to staff, students, and parents.  Ability to provide in-school training in ESL to school staff.  Ability to serve as an ESL resource.  Ability to work effectively with staff and parents.  Skills in written and oral communication, human relations, organization and management.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in ESL. Experience in administering, analyzing, and interpreting standardized tests. Other combinations of education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in education with a valid PA certification. Certificated in ESL instruction in Pennsylvania.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Perform physical requirements which may include:  Moderate to extensive degree of physical and emotional stamina  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.  Frequent and prolonged standing, walking and sitting  Ability to restrain students, respond and break up student fights, apprehend trespassers or student offenders  Frequent and prolonged talking/hearing conversations  Possess near/far visual acuity/depth perception  Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student injury and illnesses

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Some night and weekend work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to other duties and responsibilities required by all teachers, ESL teachers must provide consultative, direct, and diagnostic prescriptive services in their assignments. The amount of each service provided, as listed below, will be based upon the ESLneeds of the students as determined by the Special Education Teacher, Education Compliance Officer, team Teacher and ESL teacher in conjunction with other affected school members.

Consultatives A. Plan and coordinate ESL program with Education Compliance Officer 1. Identify strengths and needs in the program. 2. Help content area teachers develop, maintain and evaluate ongoing ESL program for each student. 3. Assist counselors in grouping and scheduling students (e.g., skills, honors, gifted/talented). 4. Assist in recommending, selecting, and ordering ESL materials (content area, media). 5. Help develop ongoing assessment measures and interpret standardized test scores in relation to school objectives and Pennsylvania requirements. 6. Inform faculty of new materials and current trends in ESL. 7. Serve as a resource to content area teachers in identifying ESL needs, adapting instructional techniques, and selecting appropriate materials for their disciplines. 8. Meet regularly with the Education Compliance Officer. 9. Consult with parents and teachers regarding student progress in ESL.

Direct Services
