Training Opportunities
Designed for counselors, supervisors, case managers, social workers, healthcare professionals, probation/parole/law enforcement, Behavioral Health Agencies and others.
Anger Management for Substance Abuse Professionals- a 1 day course (6 hours) which addresses anger management issues in the substance using population utilizing SAMHSA’s workbook. Attendees will develop a repertoire of anger management strategies, preventative strategies, and learn the cognitive restructuring model which is an advanced anger management technique.
Clinical Supervision- an 18 hour course (3 full days) which focuses on teaching and mentoring aspects of clinical supervision for addiction treatment agencies. This course assists the participants in increasing their ability and expertise in assessing the clinical skills of counselors and building learning plans which will augment their professional growth. This course includes presentations, demonstrations and hands- on learning exercises. $150.00 for three days.
Co-Occurring Disorders
Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Disorders in Adolescents: Building a Foundation for Quality Care- a 14 hour course which provides an introduction into the nature of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders in adolescents and defines a framework for integrated care to meet the needs of the clients.
Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Disorders in Adolescents: a more brief one day training (6 hours) of the workshop above.
Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in Adults- a 14 hour course which addresses the incidence and prevalence of co-occurring disorders in adults, reviews the DSM-IV TR diagnoses, introduces the principles of integrated care, provides recommendations for comprehensive assessments and treatment planning, evidence based treatment and medication management in order to provide optimal client care.
Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in Adults- a more brief version of the training listed above (6 hours)
Managing Disruptive Audiences- Gain an understanding of the potential negative impact of disruptive or inappropriate behavior in the delivery of client care and in workplace quality and safety throughout
UAB Substance Abuse Training Workshops [email protected] the organization— in clinical and non-clinical areas. Understand the recommended guidelines/strategies for dealing with agency crises, disruptive or inappropriate behavior by either staff or clientele.
Motivational Interviewing
Introduction to Motivational Interviewing- 1-day course (3- 6 hours) – which addresses the foundational elements and the spirit of Motivational Interviewing. This workshop is designed for people with minimal exposure to MI to create awareness regarding client ambivalence, to teach the MI principles and strategies to enhance their professional skills.
Intermediate Motivational Interviewing- 1 day course (6 hours)- which teaches mental health and substance abuse professionals the necessary skills to stay with the fidelity of the evidence based model, to enhance clinical practice to better utilize the four broad processes identified in Motivational Interviewing, Third Edition. Engaging, focusing, evoking and planning. Opportunities for practice and role-playing.
Advanced Motivational Interviewing and Coaching- 1-2 day (6 hours) an advanced workshop for practitioners who have been previously trained in Motivational Interviewing, and would like to submit their tapes as well as learn to code to the fidelity of this model. More demonstration and practice exercises, and less didactic material are included in this workshop. The third edition changes will be taught and practiced which include; differentiating change talk from commitment language, and learning how to elicit and shape the two. Prior proficiency and experience in the practice of MI are assumed.
Motivational Interviewing for Peer Support Specialists- a 1 day course which addresses the basic elements and the spirit of MI. Prochaska and Di Clemente’s stages of change are explained as well as opportunities for role-play and practice utilizing MI in conversation between the Peer and the PSS.
Motivating Offenders to Change: A Guide for Probation and Parole- based on U.S. Dept. of Justice nicic.org book – a two day course for Probation/Parole officers addressing engagement strategies, skills and approaches when working with offenders or justice involved individuals.
Motivational Interviewing in Primary Health Care Settings; ie, HIV, Medication Compliance, Palliative Care, Cancer Patient Care Navigators, smoking cessation, weight loss and other issues.
Ethics
Ethics and Confidentiality- a six hour course which reviews ethical standards for addiction and mental health professionals and addresses the responsibilities of a professional working in these fields. Case studies and vignettes are utilized to teach ethical decision making models and to give the participants opportunities to share and discuss ethical dilemmas in the workplace.
Ethics and Confidentiality for Peer Support Specialists- a three hour workshop which specifically addresses ethical and confidentiality guidelines in the workplace for Recovery Coaches, Advocates and
UAB Substance Abuse Training Workshops [email protected] PSS’s. Ethical dilemmas are practiced in role-plays and the Ethical Decision Making Model is utilized to practice addressing obstacles which occur while working with peers.
Strength-based Case Planning- this three hour workshop teaches strength-based approaches to better engage and retain clients in treatment or agency settings. Strength based practice involves a change from a deficit based view of the client to a more positive partnership approach while working with clients to increase better likelihood of positive outcomes.
Recovery Oriented Systems of Care- a one day training (6 hours) which addresses the paradigm shift from treating a substance abuse problem to engaging a client in a Recovery Framework. This workshop gives hands-on-experience in practicing the new views regarding; many pathways to recovery, a person- centered approach with family involvement, individualized recovery/service plans, culturally responsive concepts and an improved system of integrated care. This experiential and didactic workshop offers opportunities to practice a more engaging approach with patients and clients.
Cultural Diversity and Cultural Sensitivity- a one day training (3-6 hours) which teaches the importance of demonstrating sensitivity to persons who may differ from ourselves, dealing with issues of language, race, gender, ethnicity, faith, creed, nationality, socio-economic level, sexual orientation, disabilities and incorporates multicultural information, resources, and materials to enhance one’s attitudes, knowledge and skills. Role-playing and vignettes are used to experience various customs and cultures with co- workers, clients, patients or agencies.
Licensed Professional Counselor Supervision- (LPC) this is a three day course which meets the course requirement of the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling (ABEC). This comprehensive course addresses the role of providing supervision to Associate Licensed Counselors in Alabama. Ethics, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, theoretical frameworks, developing an appropriate plan are addressed. $350.00 for three days
Teambuilding: Having Fun While Learning to Work Together Successfully- a creative, experiential workshop which enhances teamwork, accountability, knowledge about the definition of a successful, vibrant team in the workplace where optimal outcomes are achieved by working jointly. This is fun and energizing!
Customized Workshops Available
Please contact Joan Leary for specific training needs in the Behavioral Health Field. Continuing education hours are available to counselors, case managers, social workers.
