    1/8 On the Relevance of Quantum Concepts to Dreaming Consciousness Montague Ullman, M.D. (Date unknown, between 2001-2005) In the past two decades there has been considerable focus on the effort to reach a deeper insight into the nature of consciousness via quantum mechanics. There has been very little attention paid, however, to the fact that we are endowed with two naturally recurring forms of consciousness, one experienced in the waking state, the other in the course of sleep. Waking consciousness and dreaming consciousness are intimately related but quite different in the way they are experienced. What they share in common is the continuing mystery of their connection to their neurophysiological substrate. Fred Alan Wolf is one of the few physicists who have written extensively about this mystery (Wolf, 1994). Despite Freud's classic volume on the interpretation of dreams and the further contributions of several generations of psychoanalysts since then, the fact remains that the true nature of dreaming consciousness still eludes us. At least it does to me and so I have had to look elsewhere for clues to the unique features of our dream life. It is always a risk for someone to express views outside his own ken. To minimize the risk I have worked only with several of the basic concepts of quantum mechanics in their relevance to the unique features of dreaming. In what follows I will first consider the phenomenological features of these fascinating creatures of the night. Associated with subcortical arousal mechanisms, dreams have an ancient phylogenetic origin, the physiological components of which we share with other mammals.

    Williams: Exploring the Psychic Nature of Dreams 1 Exploring the Psychic Nature of Dreams Bryan Williams Dreaming is thus one of our roads into the infinite....It is only by emphasizing our finiteness that we ever become conscious of the infinite. The infinite can only be that which stretches far beyond the boundaries of our own personality. It is the charm of dreams that they introduce us into a new infinity. Time and space are annihilated, gravity is suspended, and we are joyfully borne up in the air, as it were in the arms of angels; we are brought into a deeper communion with Nature. – British physician Havelock Ellis (1911, pp. 186 – 187) It’s probably not much of a stretch to say that the mental activity of dreaming has had a profound effect upon humankind. Dreams have reportedly been the basis for art, innovative thinking, spiritual enlightenment, calls to action, and a desire to find meaning and direction within our own lives (for a good overview of how dreaming has influenced various aspects of human life, see Van de Castle, 1994). At times, the images we see in dreams can be vivid, compelling, and highly bizarre. They can also appear to be so realistic that we may sometimes find ourselves waking up and saying, “I’m glad it was only a dream.” But could our dreams ever actually reflect some aspect of reality, in a way that could have direct impact upon our lives and those of the people close to us? One dream which seems to raise this question is the one that a grandmother living in California had once experienced.

Summary. In order to further our understanding about the limits of human consciousness and the dream state, we report meta-analytic results on experimental dream-ESP studies for the period 1966 to 2016. Dream-ESP can be defined as a form of extra-sensory perception (ESP) in which a dreaming perceiver ostensibly gains information about a randomly selected target without using the normal sensory modalities or logical inference. Studies fell into two categories: the Maimonides Dream Lab (MDL) studies (n = 14), and independent (non-MDL) studies (n = 36). The MDL dataset yielded mean ES = .33 (SD = 0.37); the non-MDL studies yielded mean ES = .14 (SD = 0.27). The difference between the two mean values was not significant. A homogeneous dataset (N = 50) yielded a mean z of 0.75 (ES = .20, SD = 0.31), with corresponding significant StoufferZ = 5.32, p = 5.19 × 10-8, suggesting that dream content can be used to identify target materials correctly and more often than would be expected by chance.

But there is another, usually quieter, Esalen that’s by invitation only: the hundreds of private initiatives sponsored now by Esalen’s Center for Theory & Research (CTR). Though not well publicized, this other Esalen has had a major impact on America and the world at large. From its programs in citizen diplomacy to its pioneering role in holistic health; from physics and philosophy to psychology, education and religion, Esalen has exercised a significant influence on our culture and society.
