The programme will promote interaction and engagement, encouraging participants to engage with the topics, looking at consequences and problem solving

Team Building exercise - STARBURST- purpose is to help participants share a bit about themselves to the rest of the group -Purpose to get to know your fellow participants better. This creates unity and trust within the group. Financial capability – Desert Island exercise this encourages participant to look at priority’s items needed to survive, this then follows on to our priority debt/budgeting sessions. Identifying skills – confidence and barriers to employment – this is a light-hearted session where participants will work in small groups to identify and discuss the above topics (flip chart exercise) Participants will work in teams during all session delivery and participants will get the benefits of working in teams, building on your communication skills, and active listening. Participants will also look at services that can help them in their pathways through recovery and back in to mainstream society.

Phoenix Futures

The programme provides opportunities for people to gain awards and participate in courses/training, further enhancing self-esteem, physical capital and future employment, training and education opportunities. The programme will consist of:

 Working on-site carrying out practical conservation tasks. At the start of the programme, participants will be encouraged to register for the Gateway Awards and John Muir Awards: The Discovery Award and The Explorer Award  Participants will be expected to attend one day per week for the duration of the pilot programme

Participants will be picked up by minibus from designated pick-up points between 9.30 and 10am and returned to the same pick-up point between 3 and 3.30pm. Waterproof clothing, steel toe capped boots, hard hats and gloves will be supplied. There will be an opportunity to do outdoor cooking with a Dutch oven to further encourage the establishment of positive and supportive peer relationships.

On-site training will include:

The exact tasks carried out by participants on the programme will vary depending on the requirements at the site. Previous programmes have included tree felling, thinning and coppicing, woodland regeneration, digging drainage channels and installing cross drains, constructing and repairing pathways, removing and installing fencing, creating wildflower meadows, building wooden retaining walls, crowning, constructing tree enclosures, and installing furniture. Participants will be comprehensively trained and risk assessed to undertake the tasks.

The programme will be led by an accredited storyteller with extensive experience. We will foster an atmosphere of hope and positivity, to the achievement of the following outcomes believed to support recovery:  increased communication skills, social skills and group work skills

 improve ability to give and receive criticism appropriately

 raise self-confidence and self-esteem

 will reflect upon past life experiences

 engage in the imagining of a new future narrative or ‘replacement self’

The programme will involve attendance at weekly workshops. Initial sessions will focus on fiction, with a professional storyteller, allowing participants to express themselves creatively and explore their own stories and potential future stories. There will be emphasis on creativity, fiction and imagined futures rather than retelling past stories. Participants will work towards creating a storytelling performance, aimed towards a small number of invited guests including families and friends. The performance will take the form of a storytelling café including tales from the storyteller and the participants. With the consent of the participants it will be possible to video or audio record providing a lasting record of the experience.

Visual Arts Project The group will be introduced to a range of visual art techniques using a range of mediums. Over the first few sessions, participants will have the opportunity to develop different techniques to inspire ideas Developing Ideas The group will develop themes and topics for their work which could be a large-scale piece of work or smaller, individual pieces. The final art work could be a permanent display within a public space/area.
