The first period I. Warm-up 1. Discuss the meaning of the title with students. (10 minutes) (1) What makes you happy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eg2OWXgLWM (2) What makes a prince happy? II. Reading Activity 1. Vocabulary (10 minutes) (1)Explain the meaning of the new words in the first three paragraphs by using pictures. (2) Divide students into groups and use pictures as cues for students read and spell the words. The student who first reads and spells the word correctly gets extra credits. 2. Have students read the first three paragraphs and answer the following questions. (5 minutes) (1) When did the story happen? (2) Where did the story happen? (3) Who are the main characters in the story? 3. Have students read the paragraphs out loud and explain the meaning of the text. (10 minutes) III. Post-reading Activity 1. Picture drawing (12 minutes) (1)Have students draw the prince based on the description in the first paragraph. (2)Invite some students to present their painting on the stage. IV. Wrap-up 1. Summary the story and ask students to make predictions about the story. (3 minutes)

The second period I. Warm-up 1. Ask students to answer the questions about the first three paragraphs. (3 minutes) (1) Where did the Happy Prince’s statue stand? (2) What landed on the statue on its way flying to a warmer place? (3) What did the swallow see when he looked up? II. Reading Activity 1. Have students listen to the CD and answer the following questions. (5 minutes) (1) What did the Happy Prince give to the poor mother? (2) Who did the Happy Prince give the jewels from his eyes to? (3) Who received the gold leaves on the Happy Prince’s body? 2. Have students read the paragraphs out loud and explain the meaning of the text. (10 minutes) 3. Comprehension Check (2 minutes) (1)Ask students to complete the comprehension questions on the textbook. (2) Check the answers with students. III. Post-reading Activity 1. Summary of the story (5 minutes) Ask students to complete the worksheet. Setting: 1. Place: ______2. 2. Discussion (10minutes) Pair the students up and ask them to discuss the following question with her partner. (1) Do you like the story? Why or why not? (2) If you were the Happy Prince, would you do what he did? Why or why not? (3)Would you do everything you could to help others without even thinking of yourself? Why or why not? 3. Retelling the story (10 minutes) Have students use the pictures in p. 51 to retell the story. IV. Wrap-up ( 5 minutes) 1. Writing Assignment Direction: If you were the poor woman, the orphan girl, or the poor people, what would you say to the happy prince? Please write a thank-you note to the prince to show how thankful you are.

The third period I. Warm-up (5 minutes) Invite some students to share their thank-you note to others. II. Sentence Pattern (1) (20 minutes) 1. Have students read the first paragraph again and underline the inverted sentences. 2. Guide students to come up with the rules of forming inverted sentences. 3. Have students do the exercises on the textbook. 4. Ask students to rewrite the inverted sentences in the first paragraph into the original form. 5. Have students read the paragraph with inverted sentences and the paragraph without inverted sentences. Ask students to compare the differences between the two paragraphs and think about why the inverted sentences were used by the author. III. Sentence Pattern (2) (15 minutes) 1. Introduce the pattern to students and ask students to complete the exercises on the textbook. 2. The teacher shows some pictures or video clips and asks the students to use the pattern to describe the picture or the clips. IV. Listening (8 minutes) 1. Have students do the listening practice on p. 52. V. Wrap-up (2 minutes) 1. Assignment Give students a picture and ask students to use the two patterns to describe the picture.

The fourth period Extension Activity 1. What is kindness? (1) Present the following poem to the students. Kindness toward others Is Never Difficult to Do! Nice words spoken Every day helps create Successful Students ! ! (2) Ask students to work in groups to use “KINDNESS” to create a poem about kindness. (3) Invite students to share their poems on the stage. 2. Kindness in the news (1) Ask students to bring reports on acts of kindness. (2) Divide students into groups and have students summarize the news in English and share it with group members. (3) Invite some students to present on the stage.
