History:

You live with your husband and 3 children; you have been married for 12 years but have been together for more than 15. You are currently staying with your brother and you are upset with him for calling DHS. You do not work outside the home but stay very busy with all the activities your kids are involved in.

Even though you are reluctant, if your worker does a good job with rapport, you will tell them:

 You very rarely leave the kids alone with Mr. Wheeler. You know he has a temper and gets mad quickly.  You are able to keep the children quiet when you are home and keep Mr. Wheeler from becoming too upset with them.  He has a very stressful job and it is your job to take care of the home and children.  Last night, you were at the grocery store with Joseph while Mr. Wheeler was home with Megan and Jackie. They were in Jackie’s room playing and Mr. Wheeler was downstairs when you left.  You told Jackie to “keep it down” and you would only be gone for 15 minutes.  Mr. Wheeler had a really bad day at work and was in a very bad mood.  Jackie told you that he and Megan were fighting over a book or something and Mr. Wheeler overheard them. Jackie said he/she came in the room and “backhanded” him/her in the face and told him/her to “shut up” and sent him/her to his room.  When you got home, Mr. Wheeler was back downstairs and Jackie was in his/her room crying into his pillow.  Jackie’s cheek was swollen and his eye was starting to bruise.  When you saw Jackie, you decided you needed “a break” from Mr. Wheeler.  You took the kids and went to your brother’s home.  Mr. Wheeler called you this morning and apologized, said he was very upset about hitting Jackie and would not do it again.  When asked about the drug abuse, you don’t really know but you think he smokes pot. He does not let you clean downstairs at all.  You are willing to stay with your brother as long as needed and he is willing to let you stay.  You don’t want the State to take your kids, but you still love your husband.  Mr. Wheeler has never hit the kids before—there are times he has gotten “rough” with you, but the police have never been out to your home.
