Silent Reading: Read for 15 minutes at the beginning of each block/book share forms are in the top drawer for students to take as they finish books. Everyone must turn in bookshare by Friday, October 29 Flowers For Algernon Day 1

Page 44 in Literature Book

Do the activity: “Make the Connection” on page 44

After discussion have students answer one of the Quick write questions on page 44. Their responses must be at least a half page. Allow some students to read responses aloud. Discuss these responses.

Read the “Reading Skills and Strategies” Aloud so students understand why Charlie misspells words.

Have students skim through and look at the pictures in the story. Have them make predictions…share predictions.

Read pages 44-52 (stop at the very top of 52 before Progress Report 9)

Have them respond to the following question: How do Charlie’s progress reports show that he is getting more intelligent? They must: restate the question + give the answer +give two examples.

Collect and tell them they will be graded Flowers for Algernon Day 2 Recap what was read on Day one….orally discuss the answers from yesterday’s question.

Have them write a prediction about what will happen in today’s reading.

Share a few of those predictions.

Read pages 52 to 60

Have students do questions 2 and 5 in shaping interpretations

Have them share responses to number 5 with a partner….3 minutes should be enough and then ask them who had similar responses and why? Flowers for Algernon Day 3 Recap yesterday’s reading and finish the story Stop periodically to see if students have questions. Ask students to look at the picture of Charlie from the beginning of the story and compare it to the photo on page 62. How does he look different? Why? Have them answer Number 3 in Shaping Interpretations (with a partner if they have been cooperative)

Collect

Writing Assignment Have students do the creative writing assignment on page 75. The response must be at least 150 words. This will be worth 50 points. Collect please.
