COURSE DESCRIPTION Canadian history is absolutely incredible when given a chance, and when approached in the right manner. If you take the time to dig into Canada's history, you are likely to find a past that is as rich and as fascinating as any other country's.

Illuminating the past, challenging you to think critically and creatively, and building the academic and social skills necessary for future educational and career endeavors are the cornerstones of this course. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to be an active participant through debates, simulations, and role-playing. The ultimate success of the course depends on you!

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS Welcome to the “Classroom of the Future”! All course resources can be found on Markville History’s Website: www.markvillehistory.com. Students are expected to check the online binder daily for the daily schedule, homework, student marks, review area, student exemplars and upcoming due dates. All handouts can be downloaded from the website and all assignments will be submitted through Moodle.

Students are expected to put forth at all times a sincere effort and to maintain and complete organized notes / online binder. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to ensure success in the course.

COURSE STRUCTURE & OVERVIEW

Unit General Time Period Unit 1: The Great War 1900-1919 Unit 2: Post War, Roaring 20s and Depression 1919-1939 Unit 3: World War II 1939-1945 Unit 4: Canada in the Modern Era 1945-2000 Unit 5: 21st Century Canada 2000- Present

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION All work submitted in this course will be assessed and evaluated using the standards set by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Level / Grade Achievement Level 4 Very high to outstanding level of achievement. Above the 80-100% provincial standards. Level 3 High level of achievement. At the provincial level 70-79% Level 2 Moderate level of achievement. Below, but approaching, the 60-69% provincial standard Level 1 Passable level of achievement. Below the provincial standard 50-59% Below 50% Insufficient achievement of curriculum expectations. Credit will not be granted.

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Within each unit, students will be assigned a number of tasks where they will receive direct feedback on their progress and learning. These tasks and the resulting feedback are designed to improve learning, and to provide a foundation for the successful completion of the summative tasks assigned in the unit. EVALUATION Your midterm and final grades will be determined by your level of performance on a number of activities. ALL EVALUATION IS BASED ON INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE, there are no group marks. Each of the activities you complete in this course (including tests) will be directly tied to the following achievement areas:
