American History II Rules and Procedures

American History II Rules and Procedures Timothy Hood- Spring 2015 ([email protected]) School Phone 910-989-2048

The American History 2 curriculum will guide students from the late nineteenth century time period through the early 21st century. Students will examine the political, economic, social and cultural developments of the United States from the end of the Reconstruction Era to present times. The essential standards of American History 2 will trace the change in the ethnic composition of American Society; the movement toward equal rights for racial minorities and women; and the role of the United States as a major world power. An emphasis is placed on the expanding role of the federal government and federal courts as well as the continuing tension between the individual and the state. The desired outcome of this course is for students to develop an understanding of the cause-and-effect relationship between past and present events, recognize patterns of interactions, and understand the impact of events on the United States in an interconnected world.

Textbook: United States History (Prentice-Hall)

Materials: You will need a binder with a three ring holder and pockets, loose-leaf notebook paper, dividers, and pen and/or pencil. It will be necessary for you to keep track of class handouts, graded assignments, and tests.

Classroom Rules:

No food or drinks except bottled water is allowed in the classroom. Eat breakfast before coming to class.

Be Respectful of your instructor, your peers, yourself, the classroom, all guests and topics discussed. With respect, the classroom atmosphere will always be conducive to learning.

Be On Time! Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to begin class, when the bell sounds. All materials needed for class should be out and ready for use. All pencils should be sharpened before the bell rings. The JHS Tardy Policy will be enforced. Students arriving to school late after 1st period must check in to the office to receive a pass before coming to class.

Be Prepared for every class. This includes bringing books, notebooks, pens, pencils, completed homework, and any other assignments to class.

Be Involved in the class. Engaging in the class will create an atmosphere of cooperative teaching. All students are expected to participate in all class discussions and assignments. Any student, who is sleeping or has his /her head on the desk, cannot be involved in the class.

Be Responsible. This includes asking the instructor for help as needed, making up all missed work in the allotted amount of time, having academic integrity (see cheating policy), and adhering to all school and county rules and/or regulations.

Electronic Devices/Cell Phones not to be seen unless specific permission is given for use on class-related research. Otherwise, keep these items put away.

Dress Code. Please adhere to all aspects of the JHS Dress Code including: Leggings must be covered by a finger-tip length top. No tank-tops/sleeveless shirts allowed. Please adhere to these rules to avoid issues. Students dressed inappropriately will be sent to the office. Consequences: . Warning- After the first failure to follow a rule, students will be given a verbal warning. . Teacher D-Hall- The next step will be for the student to spend at minimum 30 minutes with me after school for their behavior. Students failing to show up for teacher d-hall is an automatic referral to the office. . Call Home- After a student fails to adhere to the warning given and teacher d-hall I will make a call home to parents or guardians about the situation before other action is taken. . Write-up: After all of the above measures have been taken and exhausted the student will be referred to the office for further consequences.

Leaving Class: Class time is important and should not be wasted. I will not allow you to leave class unless it is an emergency or you need to go to the bathroom. Do not ask to leave class to make appointments, use a cell phone, visit the drink machines, or “take a personal break”. Per school policy, any student outside of the classroom must have a pass signed by a teacher. Generally, I do not allow more than one person to leave class at a time.

Grading Policy:

-1st 6 wks avg + 2nd 6 wks avg + 3rd 6 wks avg + Exam grade / divided by 4 = Final Grade

-This course does have a required Exam. It is not possible to be exempt from the final exam under any circumstances.

-Each 6 week grading period will be based on the following: Class work, Class Participation, Homework, Quizzes, Tests, and Projects

-Each assignment will be graded on a total points system. The number of points will vary based on the importance, detail, and difficulty of the task. -Late work may be turned in for a 70% grade. Unusual circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis. -If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for any missed work. All missed work should be made up within three school days. (Before or after school)

Cheating: Note that, according to school board policy, those who give and receive unauthorized aid are equally guilty of cheating, and both the giver and receiver will be punished equally. Students who are found to be cheating on ANY assignment (including homework!) Cheating, copying, or sharing of information/homework is not allowed and will result in a zero. This will jeopardize your chances of induction into the National Honor Society.
