A. Goals:

What is the grade level/content area of focus in this session? The content area of focus is to obtain a better understanding of Photoshop layers by creating the layers of a sandwich on a plate. Utilizing layers effectively is a key skill to have in order to create efficient and fully editable graphics. If layers are not used effectively, it can be detrimental to the success of your project.

What will the students know or be able to do after completing the session? Upon completing this session students will be able to: a. Use layering tool to produce a multi-layered image.

b. Manipulate backgrounds using the masking tool.

c. Effectively demonstrate the brush tool for added effect.

What is the general purpose of the session (e.g., remediation, direct instruction, targeting students with specific learning preferences)? The purpose of this session will be direct instruction, targeting those students who learn through listening and viewing the material. Upon request the students will be able to receive the tutorial file to read during and after the session. This will target three of the four learning styles of VARK.

B. Planning Considerations:

a. Students should have:

i. Prior experience with Adobe Photoshop.

ii. Trial version of Adobe Photoshop. Free for 30 days at: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm? product=photoshop_elements&loc=en_us

iii. Familiarity with the handling and button functions of a computer mouse.

iv. Prior knowledge of photos and Photoshop tools.

v. Understanding of Blackboard Collaborate and connecting to it via Internet.

i. Prepare session plan for guidance during the session.

ii. Create Images (plate, bread, bacon, lettuce, tomato):

a.i.1. To demonstrate layering.

a.i.2. For collaborative manipulation of layering images.

iii. Practice the use of whiteboard backgrounds for review of appearance and position of Adobe Photoshop Elements tool screen shots.

iv. Make tutorial sheet for Independent Task Assignment

v. Create rubric for Independent Task Assignment

vi. Invite myself as a new participant to see what the student will see from their side of the session.

vii. Tab videos for quick application sharing.

viii. Do a trial run with all materials to check for timing and flow.

c. Communication means:

a.i. Audio capable connections for using speakers or headphones/microphones

a.ii. Show emotion

a.iii. Raise hand

a.iv. Yes/No, multiple choice capabilities

a.v. Chat will be turned on during video clips for student comment, and if other means of communication fail. (During lesson presentation it could be distracting to participants.)

d. Students, please note:

i. Arrive five or ten minutes early for this 20 – 30 minute online session. Questions will be taken “live” after practicing together within the time

ii. Download FREE Trial version of Adobe Photoshop should you not have it already. Free for 30 days at: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm? product=photoshop_elements&loc=en_us.

iii. Email Instructor at [email protected] for practice files for lesson prior to lesson.

iv. When you are finished with the Independent Layering Sandwich Activity, save the file (in .psd format) to your computer. Make sure to name the file lastname + sandwich.psd (ex: cobbsandwich.psd). Saving it as a .psd file will preserve the layers for each component in your sandwich. Submit the .psd file by emailing it to the Instructors email: [email protected]. Review the rubric to make sure you won’t lose any points.

v. Further training concerning these objectives will be individually scheduled if need be.
