Army Junior ROTC Leadership Education 4&6 (LET 2&3) Expectations and Syllabus (Spring 2013) Northside High School LTC R. Brewer (email: [email protected])

Army Junior ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is designed to develop character, self-discipline, responsibility, leadership and an appreciation of good citizenship. For the JROTC LeadEd 4 & 6 courses (LET 2&3) cadets focus on citizenship, the constitution, leadership, military drill, physical fitness, ethics, decision-making, and military history. Further, JROTC 4 & 6 cadets are part of chain of command and, as leaders, are expected to set a proper example at all times.

GRADING POLICY

Leadership/Conduct/Work Ethic* 35% Examinations 30% Quizzes/Notebook/Homework 20% Physical Training 15%

* Leadership/Conduct encompasses performance of duties within the cadet’s assigned leadership position, compliance with directions, classroom participation, volunteer work and discipline. Cadets are subject to earn/lose points daily in this area.

ISSUED MATERIALS: Instructional materials such as handouts and textbooks are provided at no expense to the student. Additionally, each cadet is issued a uniform. The cadet is expected to properly wear the uniform, keep it clean and return it at the end of each school year, or when the student withdraws from JROTC, whichever comes first. Cadets who lose government issued texts and uniforms are expected to pay for the replacement of the item.

STUDENT MATERIALS: Cadets should have the following materials EVERY DAY in class:

1. Issued textbook, JROTC Rules and Regulations, syllabus, Cadet Reference book and assigned homework 2. A soft cover folder with side pockets and prongs for notebook paper 3. Adequate paper for note taking (2-3 sheets per class day) 4. A minimum of one blue or black ink pen and one #2 pencil

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS (These are the general expectations. Additional rules are listed in JROTC Rules)

1. Roll: Stand at attention behind your desk, answer with your first name and “Sir”, when your name is called. 2. Once your name is called be seated and complete the “Do Now” assignment. 3. Write your name, date, platoon and company on all assignments and handouts received. 4. Take well-organized notes during class presentations, lectures and group projects. 5. Be prepared for class each day with specified materials. 6. Be courteous and respectful to others at all times. Do not talk unless answering a question or authorized to do so. 7. Listen carefully and follow instructions. 8. When assigned group projects remain on task and confine discussions to the assigned topic.

MAKE-UP WORK

Make-up work is YOUR responsibility. When you return to class following an excused absence, check with me for assignments and make-up work. Assignments not made up within three days after returning to class will result in a zero.

DISCIPLINE

JROTC emphasizes self-discipline and respect for others. Disruptions in class prevent me from conducting class and interfere with the learning process of classmates. Disruptions will result in demerits (deduction of leadership/conduct points) at a minimum. I will enforce rules from the Student Handbook and JROTC Rules and Regulations. Proper behavior is expected at all times. Consequences for breaches of discipline will follow the guidelines addressed in the Student Handbook and JROTC Rules.

Keep this handout as the first item in your notebook at all times for reference as needed.

I hereby confirm I have read and understand the above guidelines and consequences. I vow to abide by these items.
