1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE ROCK HILL ELK 12 LODGE NO. 1318 ON THE JOYOUS OCCASION OF ITS ONE 13 HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO WISH THE LODGE 14 MEMBERS MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED SERVICE TO 15 THE COMMUNITY. 16 17 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to 18 learn that the Rock Hill Elk Lodge No. 1318 will celebrate a 19 century of meaningful dedication to the Rock Hill community and 20 beyond; and 21 22 Whereas, founded on March 19, 1915, following the dissolution of 23 the old Palmetto Club, the first meeting of the Rock Hill Elk 24 Lodge No. 1318 convened on the second floor of a building on 25 East Main Street that also housed Patterson’s 10and25cents store; 26 and 27 28 Whereas, early officers included the late S. J. Poag, Exalted Ruler; 29 T. W. Huey, Leading Knight; B. N. Craig, Loyal Knight; George 30 Jenkins, Lecturing Knight; I. B. Cauthen, Secretary; James P. 31 Poag, Treasurer; F. E. Cross, Tiler; and J. L. Phillips, Julian 32 Johnson, and Harry Ruff as trustees; and 33 34 Whereas, the Rock Hill Elks moved from Patterson’s and met 35 above Rock Hill Hardware and then over the old Perwinkle Tea 36 Room. In 1924, a fire caused the Elks to move into temporary 37 quarters, and later they returned to the old Masonic Hall building; 38 and 39 40 Whereas, in April 1938, the Lodge moved to a building known as 41 the Lillie Love home and stayed there until the Elks, tired of 42 moving as membership grew, bought the J. E. Reid home on East

[539] 1 1 Main Street in January 1940. They retired the mortgage in 1943; 2 and 3 4 Whereas, a $35,000 expansion in 1947 added a dining room to 5 hold seventyfive persons, secondfloor meeting hall, wellequipped 6 kitchen, game room in the basement, and spacious parking lot; and 7 8 Whereas, in 1961, the Lodge moved to a new building on East 9 Main Street, but as membership grew to 2100 in 1966, further 10 expansion became necessary. Community groups, including the 11 Rock Hill Fire Department, Police Department, and School 12 District, have enjoyed the use of the Lodge and the Lake Wylie 13 recreational facilities; and 14 15 Whereas, in 1996, the National Elks allowed women to join, and 16 the Rock Hill Elk Lodge No. 1318 initiated the first class of 17 nineteen women in 1998. Over the years, the Lodge has had the 18 distinction of winning the national initiation ritual competition four 19 times; and 20 21 Whereas, in conjunction with the South Carolina Elks Association, 22 the Rock Hill Elk Lodge No. 1318 supports such Elks projects as 23 the Alzheimer’s Program, State Deer Hide program, State Drug 24 Awareness program, and State Youth Activity programs; and 25 26 Whereas, dedicated to the community, Rock Hill Elk Lodge No. 27 1318 works closely with area youth, veterans, community shelters, 28 and community needs centers and participates in the Elks Hoop 29 Shoot and Soccer Shoot for youth ages eight to thirteen, Red 30 Ribbon Week in October, and the Dictionary Project. The Drug 31 Awareness Education Program is an exhibit the Lodge takes to 32 area schools and community events. The Lodge also sponsors a 33 baseball team and supports area agencies such as Pilgrims Inn, 34 Children’s Attention Home, The Haven Men’s Shelter, Safe 35 Passage, HOPE, Salvation Army, Area II Special Olympics, and 36 the Empty Stocking Fund. Elk Lodge No. 1318 actively supports 37 the Worthy Boys and Girls Camp sponsored by the Rock Hill 38 Police Department, funding one of the first cabins built there in 39 1949; and 40 41 Whereas, working in cooperation with York, Chester, and 42 Lancaster counties, the Lodge supports the ComeSeeMe Festival 43 in Rock Hill, Summerfest in York, the Red Rose Festival in

[539] 2 1 Lancaster, the Strawberry Festival in Fort Mill, the Pack the Pack 2 school program, and area soup kitchens; and 3 4 Whereas, the South Carolina Senate appreciates the active and 5 outstanding outreach of Rock Hill Elk Lodge No. 1318 to meet 6 vital needs in the community, and the members celebrate with 7 them this significant milestone. Now, therefore, 8 9 Be it resolved by the Senate: 10 11 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 12 recognize and honor the Rock Hill Elk Lodge No. 1318 on the 13 joyous occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and wish the 14 Lodge members many years of continued service to the 15 community. 16 XX 17
