Act II – Scene 1 & 2

1. Mrs. Van Daan reminds Miep of the message on last year’s cake: “Peace in 1943.” The new cake has a similar message for 1944. What is ironic about this year’s cake?

2. Consult the time line to determine in which year peace finally came to Europe. Was it before of after the Secret Annex was discovered and its inhabitants taken away?

3. What does Anne’s speech (top of the first column on pg. 414) reveal about her character? Why do you think Anne asks Miep to remember every detail of the party and report back?

4. Mr. Kraler told Carl about a rumor that the Franks were in Switzerland. Why did he say this to Carl?

5. Mr. Frank suggests a cautious compromise to Carl’s demand for more money. What is the reasoning behind Mr. Frank’s proposal?

6. Take a look at what Margot says at the bottom of the first column on pg 416. Do you find this comment surprising? Why or why not?

7. What is the subplot going on between Anne and Peter? Support your claim with evidence from the text.

8. Both Peter and Anne are dynamic characters. Explain how each character has changed since the beginning of the play. Use specific examples and quotes to support your responses.

10.Do you remember where we’ve seen a white glove before? What is its significance?

11.Read the discussion between Anne and Peter at the bottom of the second column on page 421. What is an inferiority complex and what clues led you to this conclusion?
