A unique opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified dentist to join the Oral Health Directorate of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The post will be based in Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, the largest provider of oral healthcare in Scotland. We invite you to join our Restorative Dentistry team. Job Profile

1. Glasgow and the Surrounding Area

Glasgow, with a population of around 740,000, is Scotland’s largest city, and one of Europe’s liveliest with a varied and colourful social and cultural life which can cater for every taste. Glasgow is the proud host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow is a city of contrasts; the bustle of a major commercial and business centre, the greenery of parks and gardens, and a wealth of art galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres. Newcomers quickly feel at home in this vibrant and friendly city. Of particular note is the University’s Hunterian Museum that is the oldest public museum in Scotland. The Hunterian Art Gallery has important art collections and contains a reconstruction of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s own house.

Glasgow has an extensive road and rail public transport system with one of the largest commuter rail networks outside London and its own underground railway, the ‘subway’, which serves the University and the centre of the city.

2. Oral Health Directorate

The Oral Health Directorate is contained within the East Dunbartonshire Community Health Council (CHP) and comprises a single NHSGGC Board wide organisation structure incorporating: - General Dental Services - Primary Care Dental Services - Secondary Care Dental Services - Dental Public Health - Oral Health Improvement - Orthodontics situated within a General Hospital environment

Community and Salaried Dental Service

This service operates on a citywide basis and provides care for patients who have difficulty accessing mainstream dental services from 32 fixed clinics in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. It compromises 57 dentists (senior salaried general dental practitioners (GDPs), salaried GDPs and Community Dental Officers) and support staff. Clinics have receptionist and dental nurse support. The service has close

4 links with Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and provides a substantial amount of outreach teaching.

The Glasgow Dental Hospital and School

Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is part of the Oral Health Directorate structure and is the main referral centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health Boards and serves a population of up to 3,000,000 people.

The Dental School delivers a modern, integrated Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme over five years to an undergraduate population of approximately 400 students. The School is ranked top in the UK for student satisfaction. Periodontics is taught within the Clinical Dentistry Section. Taught postgraduate programmes are offered in Primary Dental Care, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Orthodontics, with an option to specialise in Periodontics, Endodontics or Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics in the second year of the Primary Dental Care programme. Post graduate research opportunities are provided, within the three main research themes within the University of Glasgow Dental School; Infection and Immunity, Community Oral Health and Biotechnology and Craniofacial Science. Investigating periodontal disease is a focus of the Infection and Immunity Research Group and work ongoing at present includes development of complex in vitro models of host- pathogen interactions, dissecting the role of cytokines in periodontal disease and using patient based studies and in vivo models to investigate the relationship between systemic diseases and periodontal disease. The Infection and Immunity research group is closely linked to the UK’s only CPA accredited Oral Microbiology Diagnostic laboratory for infectious oral diseases as well as the University of Glasgow Institute for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation and therefore offers excellent facility for the development of high quality basic and translational research (http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/dental/research/). The total number of chairs within the Hospital and School is approximately 160. In addition there is an adjoining Postgraduate Centre and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is a 10 minute walk away. There are strong links with the University of Glasgow and other hospitals in the region and there is an excellent library with on-line literature search facilities.

3. Work of the Department

Restorative Dentistry embraces the clinical units of Prosthodontics (Fixed and Removable), Periodontics, Endodontics, Anxiety Management and the School of Hygiene and Therapy.

3.1. The Units of Endodontics and Prosthodontics (Fixed and Removable) are situated on Levels 6 and 2 (about to change). They comprise 67 dental chairs, 28 of these chairs forming the main undergraduate teaching clinic. There are two smaller self-contained clinics of 7 and 4 dental chairs. Additionally, there are 5 individual surgeries. Most of the office accommodation for staff is also to be found on level 6, as is a modern production laboratory with a complement of 7 technicians (who produce a

5 comprehensive range of fixed prostheses to a high standard). Situated on Level 2 is the Prosthodontic (Removable) Production Laboratory, which undertakes the technical work for both dental staff and students with a complement of 18 dental technicians. Also on level 2 are seminar rooms and office accommodation for clinical, technical and secretarial staff. The Units of Endodontics and Prosthodontics (Fixed and Removable) receive approximately 3,200 new referrals per year, giving rise to approximately 28,000 patient attendances. The current waiting time for first consultation for non-urgent referrals to the Units is 6 weeks.

In addition to specialist opinions / treatment on general restorative dentistry matters, the range of treatment includes services for patients with cleft palate, patients who have had ablative surgery to the oral cavity or suffer from hypodontia. A number of patients requiring specialist treatment are treated with the use of osseo-integrated dental implants using both Nobel Biocare and Straumann implant systems. The provision of implant dentistry is subject to limited funding.

3.2. The Unit of Periodontology, on Level 7, is a self-contained unit comprising 26 chairs (23 chairs in open clinics and 3 in enclosed surgeries), and is equipped to a good standard. One surgery is equipped for implant placement. Adjacent to the clinical areas are a seminar room and office accommodation for clinical and secretarial staff. 3.6 WTE staff dental hygienists support the specialist service in Periodontics and work as part of the Consultant led team. The Unit receives approximately 1800 new referrals per year from general dental practitioners as well as a large number of tertiary referrals. These give rise to approximately 10,000 patient attendances. The waiting time for first consultation is currently 6 weeks.

3.3. There is a School of Hygiene and Therapy within the Unit of Restorative Dentistry that trains 12 students per year (increasing to 14 in 2012). Students are awarded a BSc in Oral Health Science from Glasgow Caledonian University. This is a 3 year unclassified degree programme. Students undertake the full range of permitted treatment within the DCP School and are supported by 3.9 FTE Hygiene and Therapy Tutors, a Programme Director and a School Director (this post). There is close integration with BDS students both in GDH and at Outreach. Referrals are taken from all areas of the Dental Hospital but particularly from the Restorative Department.

The above staffing levels reflect the staffing position within Restorative Dentistry at the time this job description was compiled. Staffing levels will change to meet future service and business priorities.

5. Duties

Clinical The Consultant will provide a diagnostic and advisory service to patients referred to the Department of Restorative Dentistry in the Dental Hospital. He/she will share with Consultant colleagues responsibility for the proper functioning of the Department. The Consultant will contribute to the professional supervision and management of the Training Grades staff. The successful applicant will report to the Lead Clinician in Restorative Dentistry and will be professionally accountable to the Clinical Director and managerially accountable to the Clinical Services Manager.

6. Specimen Weekly Job Plan

The post will be concentrated on new patient referrals for diagnosis, treatment planning and allocation for specialist treatment as required. The time ratio for DCC (patient contact) and DCC (admin) will be 3:1 and there are six sessions available, preferably not a Thursday am or Fri pm.

1 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

GRADE AND SALARY Locum Consultant £ 74,504 £ 100,446 per annum (pro rata)

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

HOURS OF DUTY Part Time 24.00

SUPERANNUATION You have the option to join the NHS Superannuation Scheme, to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme or to take out a Personal Pension. Employee’s contributions to the NHS Scheme are Tiered based on your earnings and the employers contribution equates to 13.5 % of salary. Employees in the NHS Scheme are “Contracted-out” of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and pay a lower rate of National Insurance contributions. Employees who choose to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme pay the higher rate of National Insurance contribution. A Stakeholder Pension is also available. A Personal Pension is a private arrangement agreed with the pension provider that will be an organisation such as a Bank, Building Society or Insurance Company.

REMOVAL EXPENSES Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.

This post is considered to be in the category of “Regulated Work” and DISCLOSURE SCOTLAND therefore requires a Disclosure Scotland Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) Membership which currently costs £59.00.
