1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE 12 SUPREME COUNCIL OF SOVEREIGN GRAND INSPECTORS 13 GENERAL OF THE ANCIENT AND ACCEPTED SCOTTISH 14 RITE OF FREEMASONRY UPON THEIR ONE HUNDRED 15 FIFTYFIRST ANNIVERSARY. 16 17 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn 18 that on November 30, 2015, the Supreme Council of Sovereign 19 Grand Inspectors General will celebrate one hundred fiftyone years 20 of serving communities through fraternal, social, educational, and 21 charitable objectives; and 22 23 Whereas, on November 30, 1864, in New York City, Baron 24 Auguste Hugo de Bulow, Sovereign Grand Inspector General and 25 an active member of the Supreme Council of France of the Ancient 26 and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry (A.A.S.R.), organized 27 a Supreme Council of the State of New York, which title was 28 subsequently changed to the Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand 29 Inspectors General, of the 33rd and last degree of the A.A.S.R. for 30 the United States of America, its territories, and dependencies; and 31 32 Whereas, the first officers included Baron Auguste Hugo de 33 Bulow, Sovereign Grand Commander; Patrick Reason, Lieutenant 34 Grand Commander; Dr. Peter W. Ray, Adjoint Lieutenant Grand 35 Commander; Ramson Wake, Grand Orator; George Lawrence, 36 Grand Secretary; and Alexander Peters, Master of Ceremonies; and 37 38 Whereas, Illustrious Baron Auguste Hugo de Bulow served as 39 Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council from 1864 40 to 1870, followed by Illustrious Patrick Reason from 1870 to 1879, 41 Illustrious Dr. Peter W. Ray from 1879 to 1892, Illustrious A. B. 42 Allen from 1892 to 1897, Illustrious D. F. Seville from 1897 to

[4074] 1 1 1911, Illustrious H. M. Rennick from 1911 to 1920, Illustrious Dr. 2 W. H. Benderson from 1920 to 1948, Illustrious Dr. Wm. J. 3 Fitzpatrick from 1948 to 1973, Illustrious John H. Burns from 4 1973 to 1989, Illustrious James M. Boone from 1989 to 1995, and 5 Illustrious James L. Headd from 1995 to 2011. Since 2011, the 6 Illustrious Edward J. Chapman, Most Puissant Sovereign Grand 7 Commander, has served to lead the members; and 8 9 Whereas, Baron Auguste Hugo de Bulow conferred the Scottish 10 Rite Degrees on four brethren and created them Deputy Inspectors 11 General, 33rd degree: Dr. Peter W. Ray for New York, Jonathan 12 Miller for Pennsylvania, Levi Anderson for Delaware, and Lemuel 13 G. Griffin for Maryland; and 14 15 Whereas, on October 17, 1898, during the administration of D.F. 16 Seville as Sovereign Grand Commander, the Supreme Council was 17 incorporated in Washington, District of Columbia, under the name 18 of National Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors 19 General of the A.A.S.R. 33rd degree of North America, bearing 20 Instrument No. 3149 and recorded in Volume 8, folio 341, of the 21 incorporation records of the District of Columbia; and 22 23 Whereas, the original incorporation was continued in perpetuity on 24 October 14, 1948, by certificate of reincorporation of the National 25 Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the 26 Scottish Rite 33rd degree of North America, bearing Instrument 27 No. 32049 and recorded in Volume 69, folio 389, of the 28 incorporation records of the District of Columbia, under which it 29 operates at the present time; and 30 31 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is grateful for the 32 legacy of service to communities that the Supreme Council of 33 Sovereign Grand Inspectors General has provided for more than a 34 century and a half, and the members wish them continued success 35 in the days ahead. Now, therefore, 36 37 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 38 concurring: 39 40 That the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, 41 recognizes and honors the members of the Supreme Council of 42 Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the Ancient and Accepted
