HOLMAN, JR., 12 ONE OF ANDERSON COUNTY’S ABLEST AND MOST 13 DISTINGUISHED LEADERS AND OFFERING THE SINCERE 14 CONDOLENCES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL 15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO HIS 16 WONDERFUL FAMILY AND COUNTLESS FRIENDS. 17 18 Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina 19 wishes to express their deepest sympathy and most sincere 20 condolences to the family of Arthur E. Holman, Jr., a lifelong 21 Anderson resident and community leader; and 22 23 Whereas, Mr. Holman, a sixth generation Andersonian, was laid to 24 rest Monday, December 18, 2000, at the Central Presbyterian 25 Church in Anderson. Mr. Holman is survived by his wife, the 26 former Emma Lee Felkel; one son, A. Elliot Holman, III; one 27 daughter, Emily Sands; a son-in-law, George L. Sands, Jr.; one 28 grandson, George L. Sands, III, all of Anderson; and one brother, 29 John A. Holman, of Greenwood; and 30 31 Whereas, he was educated in the Anderson public schools and was 32 Valedictorian of the Boys High School Class of 1934. In 1938 he 33 graduated from the University of South Carolina. He was a life 34 member of the Board of Governors of the Educational Foundation 35 of the University of South Carolina; and 36 37 Whereas, as a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church, he 38 served on the vestry as Junior Warden and Senior Warden. He 39 was active as a lay reader and guided the church through a year 40 without a minister. He served as a delegate to the General 41 Convention of the Episcopal Church in Boston in 1952; and 42

1 [3922] 1 1 Whereas, Mr. Holman was president of the Living Endowment for 2 Anderson College for three years and he and his wife were 3 awarded the Annie D. Denmark Award in 1999 for “sacrificial 4 service to Anderson College in a manner which advanced the 5 progress and highest aims of the college”; and 6 7 Whereas, one of Mr. Holman’s greatest loves was music, and he 8 organized the Anderson Community Concert Association after 9 World War II. He served as its president for ten years. He guided 10 the Community Concert Association to become the largest music 11 group of its kind in South Carolina with a membership of two 12 thousand; and 13 14 Whereas, the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South 15 Carolina has established an endowment named “Arthur Elliot 16 Holman, Jr. Preservation and Acquisition Endowment” that 17 enables the library to acquire and conserve material of his interest, 18 which include the Episcopal Church, music and the arts, and the 19 history of Anderson County and the State of South Carolina; and 20 21 Whereas, it is most befitting for the General Assembly of the State 22 of South Carolina to pause in their deliberations to recognize the 23 distinguished career and contributions of this prominent public 24 servant, Arthur E. Holman, Jr. His love for Anderson County was 25 the central vision of his life and Arthur Holman’s imprint is left 26 firmly in his community, county, and the State of South Carolina. 27 Now, therefore, 28 29 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 30 concurring: 31 32 That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this 33 resolution, honor the memory of Arthur E. Holman, Jr., one of 34 Anderson County’s ablest and most distinguished leaders and offer 35 the sincere condolences of the members of the General Assembly 36 of the State of South Carolina to his wonderful family and 37 countless friends. 38 39 Be it further resolved that his wife, Emma Holman, be presented 40 with a copy of this resolution. 41 ----XX----
