Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another wonderful term at Marburg State School. I would like to thank all of our families for their on-going support at home and in our classrooms and to the P&C for all of their efforts during the Term. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to working with you all again in Term 3. Mrs N

Canberra Information All families of students participating in the Canberra Excursion are to be at school no later than 5.30am on Monday 11th July. Our bus leaves at 6am so that we can be at the airport in plenty of time for our flight to Canberra. I will have the school mobile with me for communication between students and parents during that week. On the contrary to the ‘What to Bring’ list, students are not required to bring any bedding with them as this is all supplied. (a pillow is optional, but not mandatory) We expect to return from the airport for pickup from school on Friday 15th July between 3.30-4.00pm. Opening of the Hub On Monday 20th June we had the opening of our Hub. It was great to see families celebrate with us and a great big thank you to the P&C for their efforts with the sausage sizzle and organising the opening.

Prep-1 NEWS The term has just flown by. Reports have been delivered and we are still working very hard in our classroom. The students have almost completed their Panda reports. They have brainstormed and listed any information we think we know about a panda, whether correct or not. Then we looked at different information texts to make sure our information was correct and that we had not left any vital information out. Having listed everything we could, we then began the task of writing our own report. It is imperative that the student know from the start that copying word for word from someone else’s writing is illegal and that it is very easy to write our own, using the information they have collected. Mrs Dance was kind enough to bring her ipad along and the students were able to view the pandas that she saw when in China. I was very excited about the writing of the Preps this week. They had completed a dot to dot and then had to write their own sentence about the picture. Their phonics really came to their rescue and they wrote some amazing sentences. Everyone was also able to read back everything they had written. It was such a magic moment. In case you need to get in touch with me, you are able to call directly to our classroom. The phone number is 5464 4434. If a child answers the phone, please do not be alarmed, as I encourage them all to be able to answer the phone politely and correctly. We are half way through the year, and your child maybe in need of some new wind-ups. Please check, with your child, if they are needed. Have a great holiday with your child/children. Remember they grow up too fast so enjoy them while you can. Take care, Ciao, Gail Ducci 2-3 NEWS Hello Everyone, Winter means we are half way through our school year and hasn’t it past by quickly? We have been busy learning the required curriculum content and working on our own personal learning goals. These goals will be reset next term so please have a conversation with your child/children about what it is they would most like to improve over the next ten weeks of school. I am sending home a puzzle book for the students to complete over the break. It contains some fun activities for the students to work on which will keep their brains active and focused on some basic facts needed throughout their school life. I would suggest taking it, and some coloured pencils, on any long car trips. Please remember to read with your child/children over the break. Their reading recording books have been returned to the class so that the students may continue working on obtaining their 200 nights of reading award for the end of year. Has your child chosen their science experiment yet? We have focused on respect this term, as a part of our school expectations. I have included for you a summary list of the class’s thoughts regarding this topic. We will continue to work towards “showing respect to all” next semester. We have done our best to return, to their rightful owners, any jumpers, track pants, hats etc. Please check that names have not washed off over the term and rewrite these as necessary. It is also a good time for pencil cases to be checked so these are also being sent home for restocking and, in some cases, a good clean out. Early to midterm three we will be holding our annual NAIDOC day event. The students will rotate through a series of indigenous inspired activities on this day as they learn about and explore the traditions and history of the first Australians. Students are encouraged to wear indigenous colours on that day. Please be aware that these clothes need to meet the requirements of the school’s sun safety policy. Thank you for your support this term, especially to the lovely ladies who volunteer their time as parent readers/helpers. Have a safe and relaxing Winter break. Regards Marina K

FROM MRS BRYANT Well, here we are at the end of Semester 1. It has been a great Semester of learning - we have covered Biological and Earth and Space Sciences, mapping skills and the early colonies of Australia. There will be lots more learning coming up after the break! For this week, we are going to focus on technology with an introduction to coding using the 'Scratch' program from MIT. This is a friendly introduction for learners (of all ages including me) to some of the basic principles of coding using a 'drag and drop' approach to programing.

Have a really restful break and I look forward to seeing everyone next Semester for more adventures in learning. Cheers, Mrs B

4-5-6 NEWS Well hello to all the parents of students in year 4/5/6 and we hope you have had a wonderful fortnight. Over the last fortnight students have presented their short story animations and their design and technology product to their classmates. Each student had to engage in processes that involved design, problem solving creation of characters/sets and prototypes and then oral presentations that involved talk about the creation of their short story or promoting their product in a mini advertising pitch. I was impressed with their dedication to the processes and how they overcame challenges with both assessment pieces. Well done everyone!!! The last week of this term we have focussed on revision of core skills in English and Mathematics and have spent time reflecting on our individual goals and targets and renegotiating new ones for Term 3. A reminder to all parents that in the first week of term 3, I am in Canberra with 8 of our students attending our bi-annual Canberra Excursion. Due to the number of my students remaining at school, I have employed Mrs Jayne Matis to relieve from Monday to Wednesday during this week. Mrs Bryant will be in the classroom as usual on the Thursday and Friday. This will ensure consistency for the class during the first week back. Second week back on Tuesday July 19th we have our Marburg Athletics Carnival all day. For new parents we have all of our field events at school in the morning followed by a sausage sizzle at school provided by the P&C. Then we all walk down to the community oval to undertake our track events for the afternoon. It is a lovely day and we hope to see all of our families there to cheer on the kids. If at any time you have any questions regarding your child’s progress please feel free to contact me at school or by email- [email protected] I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday and I will see you in week 2 of Term 3. Until next time, take care, Mrs N.

Student Absences There has been an increasing number of unexplained student absences. Arriving to school late is recorded on the roll, as well as any absences. If your child/ren are to be absent from school for any reason, please let us know the reason on or before the day. Simply a note, a text or a phonecall from you, the parent/guardian. Next term a new system will be put in place for ALL state schools regarding daily notification of student absences. Watch this space.

P&C NEWS Thanks to all who attended the official opening of The Hub on Monday! It was a great afternoon being able to celebrate all the hard work the parents and families have put into the school. We know the teachers and kids really appreciate the wonderful new learning and play space! Our Chocolate Drive is now complete, and we are waiting on several families to return the money from selling the chocolates. Please get this to us ASAP so we can finalise the fundraiser!

Thanks for all who ordered tuckshop for our Cheerio & Chips day, we raised $119 for the P & C! The Poets in the Park event will now take place on the 13th August, more information on this to come next term. The Marburg State School Athletics Carnival is at the beginning of next term. We will be arranging a sausage sizzle for this event – a note will come home in the first week of term with more information, so please keep a look out for this!

We need help! As you may have noticed, some of the books that your children have been bringing home for home reading are not covered – this is an easy job, but can be time consuming. Please contact Sam on 0418 733 638 if you are able to help cover a few books, or even take some books and contact home to cover them. There are many books to be done, so any help at all is much appreciated!

We now have a Facebook page! This page will be used for communicating information on upcoming events and notices from the P & C committee to parents. It is a closed group, so please request an invite to the “Parents And Friends Of Marburg State School” Facebook page. Our next P & C Meeting was postponed from Friday 10th to Friday 17th June, 2016, due to many teachers being away on the 10th and no parade being held that day. If there is anything that you would like to be brought to the table at our next meeting, please contact the P & C on email [email protected], contact any of the executives on the below numbers, or drop a note in the P&C Box outside of the office. All Parents and Caregivers are most welcome. Hope to see you all there!
