THE 12th Annual JUSTICE BROTHERS-SHAV GLICK AWARD

2011 Motor Racing Legends Nominated

Duarte, CA: Once again, it’s time to nominate the Justice Brothers-Shav Glick Award contestants for 2011. This year’s honored motorsports legend nominees are Craig Breedlove, Robert E. Petersen, Ed Pink and Al Watson. The Justice Brothers-Shav Glick Award recognizes those who have made distinguished contributions to motorsports in California. Shav Glick was a long-time motorsports writer for the Los Angeles Times, and a member of the Motorsports Hall Of Fame. He passed away in 2007. The winner will be announced at the Auto Club 400 NASCAR race on March 27, 2011.

Craig Breedlove made his first land speed record attempt in 1962, piloting a freewheeling tricycle powered by a General Electric J47 engine. He ignored FIA rules requiring four wheels, a least two being driven, but the FIA accepted his speed run anyway. He was a five-time world land speed record holder and the first to reach 400-mph (640 km/h), 500-mph (800km/h) and 600-mph (970 km/h). His aerodynamic vehicles were all turbo-jet powered and named Spirit Of America. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 1993, and the International Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 2000.

Robert E. Petersen, founder of the Petersen Publishing empire, passed away in 2008. He was responsible for starting Hot Rod, Car Craft, Motor Trend and many more influential special-interest automotive magazines and books. He began his illustrious career by selling subscriptions to Hot Rod from the trunk of his car at automotive events. As founder and benefactor of the Petersen Automotive Museum, he created one of the nation’s finest, and most comprehensive automotive museums, serving many thousands of visitors each year. Ed Pink was a premier drag racer and engine builder for over 50 years. He started racing on the dry lakes of California, and then moved to the early drag strips in the area. Over forty years ago he was nicknamed “The Old Master” by his contemporaries, because of his incredible knowledge and expertise building winning race engines. He was famous for building Blown Fuel Race engines during the Sixties and Seventies. He also built racing engines for USAC Silver Crown, Spring Car and Midget racers. Any racer wanting the best engine used Pink’s famous slogan “Think Pink”.

AJ Watson was a racecar builder and chief mechanic at the Indianapolis 500 from 1949 through 1984. His cars won the race seven times, which tied him for the record of most wins by a builder. In 1949 he entered a home-built car, but failed to qualify. For the next 11 years, his cars qualified for every race. From 1955 to 1958 he was associated with the John Zink team, and from 1959 on with the Bob Wilke team. His cars dominated the 1964 Indy 500. He continued to build and enter racecars for the next two decades. He was inducted into the National Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 1993 and the Motorsports Hall Of Fame Of America in 1996.
