Re: Lecturer Courtesy Appointment, Dual Enrollment

Dear :

At the recommendation of the faculty in the Department of ______, I am pleased to invite you to join our faculty as a Courtesy Lecturer in ______. This appointment is effective for the 201__-201__ academic year [appointment dates need to be entered here] and may be renewed upon mutual consent. A courtesy appointment is non-tenure earning and carries no financial obligation on the part of the University.

As a Courtesy Lecturer, you may teach courses in your areas of specialization and may serve on departmental committees. Specific requirements for any of these activities are at the discretion of the department chair or the dean.

In recognition of your contributions as a Courtesy Lecturer in the Dual Enrollment program, we are pleased to offer you the following benefits:

 A photo ID card. You may take this letter to the FIU One Card Office, floor of PG 1-100 (Gold Garage) or to the Wolfe University Center, room 1110 (Biscayne Bay Campus) to have your photograph taken and obtain your University ID card at that time. The card allows you to take advantage of any discounts offered to faculty/staff and to check out materials from either the library at either the Modesto A. Maidique Campus or the Biscayne Bay Campus. You may search the Library holdings online at http://www.fiu.edu/~library/. With the ID card, you may also check out a computer for up to three hours’ use in the Maidique Library, which has a wireless environment. There is a $10 fee for the ID card.  Special prices on software. To review what programs are available, go to http://shoputs.fiu.edu/.  A tuition waiver equal to 3 credit hours for every 4 courses taught. Please contact Sherilyn Lukas in the Division of University College (305-348-7577) so that she may provide the necessary information for processing the waiver.

Just as your high school must meet certain requirements in order to be fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, so does FIU and your appointment is conditional upon your acceptance of these requirements. Part of these requirements includes our credentialing of faculty to ensure that they have the appropriate training and preparation to teach our courses. You have already been credentialed to teach with us, so congratulations on being approved to do so.

www.fiu.edu Courtesy Appointment, Dual Enrollment Page 2 FIU has instituted a Professional Development, Mentoring, and Oversight Program to ensure that you are well prepared to teach our course. Professional development programs may include on-campus workshops, small group discussions, one-on-one mentoring, and/or other professional development activities as appropriate (course content expectations, pedagogy, expectations of student achievement, supplementary materials to enhance instruction).

We will use some or all of the oversight activities listed below to determine any additional needed professional development/ mentoring: 1) Announced classroom visitation (observation of teaching and structured feedback using rubrics); 2) Review of syllabi (examining syllabi for all FIU specified components and providing sufficient details to students including plagiarism and academic misconduct policy); 3) Review of other teaching materials (PowerPoint, handouts, lesson plans or lecture notes, use of primary and secondary sources, etc.); 4) Assessment of student learning (rubrics used for each type of student assignment and feedback provided to students for improvement – graded and ungraded student work); 5) Review of exams/quizzes, and other types of student assessment (student artifacts like homework, electronic or paper portfolios, essays, reports, term papers, oral and/or video recordings of student performance). For purposes of assessment processes, please save two years’ worth of student papers and exams as these may need to be collected for on-campus review.

The goal is that you in the high school will receive the same support and mentoring provided to part-time faculty on campus. Rest assured that any information collected by FIU mentors is only used for the continued development of the dual enrollment program.

We do need to follow University Policy which requires every course taught by Florida International University faculty be evaluated by its students. The results of 8 of the questions in the Student Assessment of Instruction must be made public and may be accessed through the University website. The results of the remaining 11 questions and the student comments are not made public and are available only to the instructor, the FIU department chair, and any others from FIU involved in the Professional Development, Mentoring, and Oversight Program.

We hope you will find this increased interaction with FIU a valuable resource. Please sign below to accept this appointment and return in the enclosed envelope or scan the letter and email to [email protected] prior to (insert date). If you have any questions please contact Sherilyn Lukas, Dual Enrollment Coordinator, at 305-348-7577 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Gisela Casines, Ph.D. Associate Dean
