QUICK SNAPSHOT:  Units to Graduate: 87  Units in Classrooms: 64  Required after 1L:  Professional Responsibility Course (Law 312, other designated courses)  Substantial Analytic Writing (SAW) Project (professor must certify with form)  Minimum Units per semester: 12  Maximum Units per semester: 16 (17 with permission) (J-term can be added on)  “Residency” Requirement: Students must be in residence at UCLA Law for at least six full-time semesters unless a transfer student or on an approved visit.  Must graduate within five years of beginning legal study.

CLINICS and EXTERNSHIPS  Clinics – UCLA has long been recognized for its innovative approach to clinical teaching, which transforms the classroom into a real-world laboratory through the integration of theory and practice. Clinical registration is separate from (and earlier than) general course registration. See our curriculum guide online for current clinical offerings.  Externships – UCLA offers both full-time and part-time externships in judicial chambers, government agencies, in-house corporate counsel and non-profit organizations. Students can choose to do one full-time or up to 10 units of part-time externships, but not both. o Full-time: 13 units total - available in 4th, 5th and 6th semesters o Part-time: Up to 10 units total – available 2L and 3L years, multiple semesters For more information contact Lisa Mead, Director of Extern & Field Placement Programs at [email protected].

BEYOND THE LAW SCHOOL CLASSROOM  Individual Research/Study (Law 340, 341, 345) o With supervision of a professor, students can earn between 1 and 7 units of individual research (independent study) units by drafting an original scholarship paper or original research/empirical or field study. Contact Student Affairs.  Study Abroad o UCLA Law has partnerships with over 10 countries for a semester-long study abroad. Contact Tiffany Parnell in Graduate Studies at [email protected].  UCLA Courses o Students can earn up to 6 law units by taking courses in other departments at UCLA. Contact Student Affairs.  Law Review and Journals o Students can earn individual research (Law 340) units for law review and journal comments. Students can also satisfy the SAW requirement through this process. Contact Student Affairs.  Moot Court and Mock Trial o Students can earn individual research (Law 345) units for certain moot court and mock trial competitions. Contact Student Affairs.
