Government Welcomes Commonwealth Support for Roe 8

MEDIA RELEASE

Dr Mike Nahan MLA Member for Riverton

Government welcomes Commonwealth support for Roe 8

Riverton MLA Dr Mike Nahan has welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment to work with the State to deliver improved traffic and freight safety and efficiency around the metropolitan area.

The cornerstone of the Federal commitment is the $1.57billion Perth Freight Link project which will provide a high-standard, traffic light-free freight corridor to the Port of Fremantle.

“Negotiations will now begin between the State and Federal Governments over the details of the arrangement,” Dr Nahan said.

“The proposal would take heavy vehicle traffic off local roads, meaning greater safety, less noise and congestion in Riverton and will be a major boost to the productivity of our freight network. It is estimated travel times between Reid Highway and the Port would be reduced by about 16minutes, and other efficiency gains could also be expected, including a necessary link to the $1.8billion Fiona Stanley Hospital.

The investment in road transport infrastructure in the Perth metropolitan area has reached an unprecedented level. Included in the joint State/Federal projects are:

 $1.57billion Perth Freight Link  $1billion Gateway WA – works well underway  $844million NorthLink WA (Reid Highway – Muchea) – start 2016  $281million NorthLink WA (Tonkin Highway interchanges at Collier/Morley/Benara) – start 2016  $45million Roe Highway/Berkshire Road Interchange – start mid-2014.

Together with the raft of transport infrastructure projects announced in last week’s State Budget, road users and communities will see a big improvement to our road network, a part of the Liberal National Government’s vision to meet the needs of Western Australians now and into the decades ahead.

“Important community groups in Riverton, such as the Riverton Rossmoyne Shelley Residents Association (RRSRA), have long argued the need for Roe 8 and I trust that they will welcome this announcement,” Dr Nahan said. The coming years will see a lot of positive transport improvements, and clearly demonstrate what can be achieved with a real partnership between the State and Federal levels of our Governments.
