M’DALA TRUST FUNDRAISING GOLF DAY : 3 NOVEMBER 2017

The 2017 Fundraising Golf Day, which was held at Westlake Golf Club on Friday 3 November, was another successful, happy and enjoyable event – our twelfth fundraising golf day and our fifth at Westlake Golf Club. The anticipated field of 144 was four short as one ‘team’ withdrew on the eve of the golf day, which was regrettable since the field had been fully booked for the three months before. However, the remaining players got underway with a shotgun start at 12h00 in nearly perfect weather conditions although there had been a light shower the night before.

The Westlake Golf Club, who is once again congratulated on the superb condition of the course and especially the greens, made every effort to ensure the success of the day. The whole experience with the Westlake Golf Club was again a complete pleasure and we enjoyed maximum co-operation, willing assistance and good catering arrangements.

The competition was a four ball alliance (Stableford scoring) with the two best scores to count. Prizes were again awarded to the first ten places – the first prize being R1,000 gift vouchers generously donated by Peter Winhall of Winhall & De Stadler (Blue Route Centre). Further donations to the prize table were received from Iain Hooper of Edward Snell, Kanonkop Wine Estate, Edgebaston Wine Estate and Simonsig Wine Estate. We express our appreciation to all these donors.

Stu Miller again donated six bottles of Madala wine (from Franschhoek) for presentation to a selected echelon amongst the players of the day. In previous years this presentation was made to the four oldest golfers, but as the four oldest last year would still be the oldest this year, the group selected was the four oldest lady golfers! The ladies names cannot be stated for reasons of discretion but the ladies were pleased to be specially identified and to receive their Madala wine.

Thank you Stu for again donating the wine.

Fundraising Raffle and Auction.

Our other fundraising initiatives were the raffle and the auction and both were well supported. Nearly all the 1200 raffle tickets were sold and the auction items realized a meaningful amount. The raffle prize winners enjoyed the twenty six prizes that were worth an amount of about R100,000.

The auction had a personally signed and framed print of Flt Lt Ian Smith’s Spitfire raiding over the Po Valley during WW11, three mint condition copies of The Great Betrayal (two signed – one to the late Professor Peter Jacobs and the other to Joyce McLaughlin, wife of Patrick McLaughlin), a framed copy of the Rhodesian Independence Scroll (smaller than the usual full size item), a framed Fire Force deployment print, a finger painted Cheetah painting, four Peter Badcock signed prints, a box of Cuban cigars, a signed and framed print of the millennium cricket game (originally donated by Duncan Fletcher), a framed and signed Charlie Aust painting of Historic Bulawayo and Environs, a Rhodesia commemorative medallion (donated by Walter Hart), a framed print of Alan Wilson’s Last Stand with a copy of the book ‘The white Men Sang’ and fourteen golf club complimentary playing vouchers.

Dave Kinleyside managed the auction again with his special aplomb and humour – and cunning! One certainly cannot make any unintentional hand or eye movements while Dave is cajoling the buyers.

Gold Travel Raffle

An on-course raffle was arranged by Konrad Laker of Gold Travel – golfers participated simply by providing a printed business card on the 1st tee and the three lucky winners were drawn after prize giving. Anne Bishop manned the Gold Travel table on the 1st Tee throughout the day in the varying weather conditions ensuring that all golfers had the opportunity to deposit their business cards or complete a prepared blank card if they did not have business cards.

123 players entered the draw.

The prizes winners were :

1st Prize – R5000 Discount on travel booked on Emirates Airlines. Won by Peter Matthews. 2d Prize – Magnum of quality red wine and two bottles of quality wine. Won by Johan van Heerden. 3rd Prize – Magnum of quality red wine. Won by John Jordan. Financial Support for the M’dala Trust

Leon Jacobs, the M’dala Trust chairman, spoke briefly to remind all golfers that the golf day is held annually to make as much money as possible for the support of our pensioners and to also market the M’dala Trust with a view to encouraging financial support by way of financial donations. Leon explained that the Trust currently supports 26 pensioners each and every month at a cost of R53,700.

He acknowledged that a number of those attending the golf day, along with others, make regular donations and expressed the gratitude of the Trustees for this support and he pointed out that as the M’dala Trust was a registered NPO tax receipts can be and are issued for any financial donation. He strongly suggested that it makes sense, surely, to donate to the Trust and use the tax receipt for tax recovery rather than just paying the Receiver!

He asked if supporters of the Trust would consider using this financial support facility – all that is required is for an amount to be deposited in the M’dala Trust bank account (Standard 374 230 927, Branch Code 036 009) and for Leon to be emailed ([email protected]) with postal address details. Tax receipts would be sent immediately for once-off donations and on 1 March for the regular donations.

2018 Fundraising Golf Day

The golf day next year will be held at Westlake Golf Club on Friday 2 November, the format being generally the same as we had this year. Entry fees are not yet determined, but first notices will be sent to all those on our possible players list at the end of March confirming details and stating the entry fee. However, it is suggested that those who are keen to play again make a note of the date so that they are not disappointed – it is significant that the field this year was completely booked twelve weeks before the event, such is the popularity of this event.
