Trailblazette Volume 2 Issue 3 February 2015
If you haven't started gathering your pledges yet, there is still time, but don't delay. This is snowmobiling key charity fundraiser and it is for a great cause. The Sault Trailblazers have been involved in this from the beginning and with so many places in Ontario without snow this year Easter Seals needs our help. If every snowmobiler raised the minimum pledge amount of $150 we could really show other towns that Sault Ste Marie and the Trailblazers cares. With construction next to Gino's Restraint and the trail closing, the venue has changed to the Grand Gardens on the corner of 4th line and Great Northern. Registration starts at 7 till 10 AM Saturday February 7th, breakfast is $5 but if you gathered $150 or more in pledges than the Rotary Club of Sault Ste Marie picks up tab. The Trailblazers will have our warm-up fire at the tune around on the Robertson Lake Road. It was felt that we needed to more further out on the trail than last years spot, hopefully it works out. Lunch will be at the ski lodge at Searchmont and I believe this is where McDougals will provide $25 dollars of regular fuel. If you have a sled like mine, I add some octane booster. Prizes for the largest $ collected and other prizes form local business will be handed out back at the Grand Gardens. Always a fun and rewarding day out on our local trails. See you there! Bon Soo Kids Rides It has been an on again off again event, the winter carnival run separately from the city asked us to be part of the event and we got excited about it. Bon Soo event organizers wanted a bigger venue than last year so events like ours could come back. Mill Market seemed to be just the ticket. lots more parking and just more room than Clerge Park. Darrell and Karen have meet with Officials and we have a small trail location to run our event and within the carnivals grounds so there will be more people and more exposure to what modern snowmobiling is like. Sunday February 8th from 11 AM till 4 PM. We need sleds and people to help out, if you can help call or email Karen or even just show up. Ray and Effie are manning the warm-up trailer and there will be food and drink. See you there! Dunlop Lake Lodge Tour A few pictures from last weekend’s overnight ride to Elliot Lake's Dunlop Lake Lodge. I am told that the ride was long and very cold. Karen came prepared with sandwiches for one of may rest breaks. She had them under the hood of her sled wrapped up in tinfoil against the engine muffler and on a cold ride they had warm sandwiches. Tasty treat for all.
1 I am also told that this trip had some excitement in the form of a crash. Rick Nisbet added to that excitement by driving off the trail and into some trees. He is ok but his beloved ride isn't so lucky.
2 Bobby is OK!
Bobby McKee is alive and maybe a little shook up (he will not admit it) but now missing one of those nine lives he seems to have. A little back story, Bobby was doing well what Bob does really well. He was out at night grooming our trails making them smooth as a baby's bum, on January 16 in the wee hours of that morning the groomer went into the Goulias River. I am not going to get into why or what if's and who is at fault. What I want to say in this newsletter is that we came close to loosing a good friend, a great groomer operator, and invaluable club volunteer. So, what have we all learned from this mess. We needed to have in place clear polices about working around water and most important this water crossing. The club has now a very clear policy about how we build and groom this crossing. On the lighter side, we learnt that the Groomer doesn't float!
Construction along the Power Line Brookfield Power is installing a new fiber optic cable from the substation on top of the mile hill to there offices in the Sault. Old Goulias River Road has been plowed and we moved the trail back to last years location just beside the road. Crews and Equipment will be along the trail and in some cases on the trail stringing cable. Garnet Greenwood and our club President John Breckenridge are working with Brookfield and Great Lakes Power to try and keep snowmobilers on our trails safe and hopefully not to much in the way our the power line crews. Something For Nothing It is a slow day in the small town of Phumphandle, and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everyone is in debt, and everyone is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the hotel and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his room bill with the hotel owner who gave him credit when his wife kicked him out for the night. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.
3 At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves. No one produced anything. No one earned anything... However the whole town is now out of debit and now looks to the future with a lot more optimism. And that, ladies and gentleman, is how a stimulus package works.
