Write-up

York Bridge ConceptsTM (YBC), is known for its premier timber bridge status in the industry focusing on four cornerstones to maximize bridge life including design, materials, craftsmanship, and maintenance. Through the years the company has faced various challenges in design and build processes, creating innovative crossing solutions that aim to overcome physical on-site obstacles in the best interest of the health, safety, and welfare of individuals around the bridges. August of 2017 marks a time that YBC’s product was tested beyond the physical site as the uncontrollable force that is known as mother nature stirred up trouble.

The 2017 Hurricane Season posed a significant threat to the southern United States’, outlying territories’, and surrounding island nations’ communities and infrastructure standing in the path of three named storms that were historically unprecedented. YBC’s headquarters and hundreds of their partnerships were about to face their biggest risk to their physical existence with the power stored in these storms. Harvey made landfall on August 25th in Rockport, TX as a Category 4 hurricane with 130 mph sustained winds and proceeded to drop up to 60 inches in rain over 9 days. YBC’s Rockport pedestrian bridge took a direct hit from the eye of Harvey and came out unscathed with no visible damage. YBC will be visiting the site for an inspection to certify the safety and security of the bridge. Irma blew in from the Caribbean, breaking a record with sustained winds of 185 mph for 37 continuous hours. Irma changed course by the hour and finally made landfall on September 10th in the Keys as a Category 4 hurricane. YBC’s Florida-based headquarters and its regional bridges braced for impact. Two bridges stood out in the days following #IRMA including a small pedestrian bridge in Marathon Key and a private boardwalk on Tampa’s west coast. Each bridge remained in place with minor aesthetic damages despite significant impacts in the surrounding areas. Hurricane Maria followed Irma clashing most notably with Puerto Rico as a Category 5 with 175 mph winds devastating the island. YBC has not confirmed if any major damage was caused to its structures in Maria’s impact zones. Amidst the destruction left in these storms, the country responded with messages of strength #TexasStrong, #FloridaStrong, and #PuertoRicoStrong, filled social media with an outpouring of support from individuals and organizations lending helping hands, supplies, and donations.

The acts of kindness following these catastrophic storms coining a term reserved for moments like this and that is Resilient. Resilience is the people that awoke after the storms cleared to walk outside and help their neighbors. Resilience is the friends and family opening their home to provide

At YBC the term resilient struck two cords - the first being the desire to help communities impacted near and far with supply donations; the second being the ensuring that their partnerships safely endured the storms.

It is in this moment that the term resiliency can be added to the list of benefits provided by a YBC timber bridge to our partners. As timber is a renewable & natural product that can withstand mother nature’s toughest curveball. YBC’s design and craftsmanship with an unmatched attention to detail ensures that a York BridgeTM maximizes its strength and integrity. Lastly, YBC’s dedication to the evolution of its products through research and development of low maintenance protective systems that contribute to a bridges sustenance and longevity.
