The Hatch Memorial Scholarship was founded in honor of our dear colleague, Eric J. Hatch (1943-2009), to provide fin ancial support to undergraduate students seeking to complete internships. We will always remember Dr. Hatch’s co ntributions to our department and field, and thank those who gave generously to establish this scholarship that exten ds his legacy here at Appalachian State University. We have included below excerpts from articles in The Appalac hian that help capture his spirit. We think you will see that his orientation toward serving the greater good and the c ommunity runs through the purpose of this scholarship, which is to assist students in gaining opportunities to obser ve and practice psychological skills in applied settings.

– The Faculty of the Department of Psychology

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Eric Hatch joined the Department of Psychology in 1979. He received his doctorate in school psychology from Penn State in 1973 and held positions as assistant professor at both Duquesne University and Penn State prior to joining the faculty at Appalachian.

From 1979 to 1992, Dr. Hatch was the founding coordinator of the School Psychology Graduate Program at Appalachian in addition to his other duties in the department.

He served as the president of the North Carolina School Psychology Association (NCSPA), the state professional organization for school psychologists from 1982-83. He was instrumental in the early efforts of school psychologists to develop a strong presence in the state. Since 1992, Dr. Hatch maintained a heavy teaching load, particularly in the areas of educational psychology, personality and child therapy. He was often cited as a “favorite teacher” among the student body and his lively and engaging lecture style earned him many accolades.

In addition to his teaching and scholarship responsibilities at Appalachian, Dr. Hatch maintained a private practice in the community and was a Licensed Psychologist in North Carolina.

“He was not just an excellent professor and scholar, but an outstanding community member,” psychology professor Kurt D. Michael said. Michael said Dr. Hatch was uniformly beloved by students, faculty and community members. “Fundamentally, his role here was one of a mentor and teacher to students,” Michael said. “Many students tell stories of how they changed the direction of their careers because of his teachings and advice. And his role of mentor was not limited to students, but to the faculty as well.” Dr. Hatch was known among students for his passionate teaching. “I think his genuine concern for humankind drove his teaching. He seemed to be infinitely curious and passionate about the common struggles of mankind.”

Associate psychology professor Bob Hill said Dr. Hatch was a welcome confidant for students, and was always ready to support the distressed. “He was typically in a positive or outright happy mood, which he shared with students and colleagues,” Hill said. Hill said Dr. Hatch’s teaching had the ability to reach students; many of them took him a second time to gain further exposure to his views “He manifest[ed] clearly humanistic values with his students, honoring their experience and opinions, and using humor and stories to bring home relevant content,” Hill said.

Along with his teaching, Dr. Hatch was known for his love of baseball, organizing poker nights, cigars and golf. HATCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
