Developing Capability for Effective Collaborative Practice

Assessment brief and guidelines

The aim of the module is to learn about and practice context and development of the conceptual skills necessary in your role as a collaborative worker required in contemporary health, social care and education setting. In order to demonstrate your achievement of learning outcomes in this module You will be required to submit a piece of coursework in the form of a learning journal of approximately 2,500 words and an action plan of approximately 500 words

What do I include in my learning journal?

A learning journal is a record of your personal learning throughout the module. As such it is a document which is unique to you. The learning journal will include evidence of your personal development and will evidence your comprehension and application of the key concepts within the module to your practice through your reflections on different learning experiences from placement, university and self-directed learning opportunities.

The learning journal will contain your record of your experiences and reflections of how you are personally relating to what you are learning in the module to your practice . One of the most important things it contains is your conclusions about what you have learnt and the relevance to you and how you will use the new information/ knowledge/ skill in the future to enable you to become an effective collaborative worker. You will be expected to demonstrate how you are relating this learning to your personal and professional development needs through your action plan.

How am I being assessed?

Your learning journal will include a number of entries (a minimum of 4) and through these entries you will be able to demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes. The number of entries will be determined by the context of your chosen learning experience and what learning outcome the experience has enabled you to address effectively. It is not an events diary or simply a record or log simply describing the learning event.

What are markers looking for?

Remember to look at the module assessment criteria to help with this. Your work is marked for comprehension of a chosen concept for example team working and its application in a placement setting. It is necessary to analyse and evaluate this. For example what factors contributed to positive collaboration and what challenges did you experience. It is important that you support these entries with theory which can be found from a range of resources e.g. books, journals, policy reports and national directives, online resources. You will need to avoid just a purely descriptive account of a situation. Can you give me an example?

For example think about the following:

 During my team/group work, how did the activities enable me to learn about my team work skills and collaborative working? What personal qualities did I demonstrate? How did we work together to achieve the task? What may have led to a more improved outcome?  Did I perform as indicated on self-assessment tasks? What weaknesses do I need to develop for my personal practice  Have I seen a good example of good collaborative practice which benefitted a patient/ service user/ carer during my placement? What observable good practice can I apply in future within my own practice  What have a learnt from my fellow students that will inform my future practice?  What factors and contemporary policy drivers are affecting/influencing how we are working together in practice?  How are service users and carers involved with the wider team in practice? How are they encouraged to get involved with the service that they receive? Are there any barriers to this?  Have I put any theory into practice and vice versa can I provide theory to support my thoughts about collaborative working and service user involvement?  How can I use this to plan for the future?

It is not necessary to write about personal feelings in this learning journal.

How do I present my Learning Log?

This is up to you so try to find a structure and reflective model that you like. This is only one example of how you can structure each entry. You need to choose entries of personal experiences as it relates to course content and with relevant theories

What happened/what did I experience?

What did I learn from this?

What will I do differently next time? What further support or resources do I need next time?

What is my next step in this area of learning?

What goes into my action plan?

Your actions for your future development will be evidenced in an action plan, utilising the domains (one from each) of the Interprofessional Capability Framework.

Please use this structure to present your action plan and remember it is your plan to be used to support your development so try to be specific about your actions and the evidence you will need to ensure success.
