Accomplishments and Information: Since the 2008 meeting in Cincinnati, the International Section has accomplished several tasks. Those include:  James Finckenauer (Rutgers University, USA), School of Criminal Justice was selected as the 2009 G.O.W. Mueller Award recipient.  Arrangements were made for our annual G.O.W. Award Luncheon at the 2009 meeting in Boston. Again, through the diligent efforts of Hedi Nashari, the IS was able to obtain an excellent arrangement for the luncheon that did not require the IS to subsidize the luncheon for the IS members. However, the Board did agree again to subsidize the luncheon for any students who attended the luncheon with a reduced price to be finalized before the March 2009 meeting.  For the 2009 ACJS meetings, there are over 30 sessions (up from 23 panels in Cincinnati – ‘08) that have an international orientation/theme to them.  Harry Dammer was recommended to the ACJS Board to serve as NGO representative to the Un in New York.  In response to the success of the IS sponsored panel session on genocide in Cincinnati, the Chair (John Winterdyk) agreed to Guest Edit and Special Issue on the theme for the International Criminal Justice Review journal. The issue is scheduled to be published in 2009. In includes several of the papers presented at the session. All papers were subject to a peer review process.  Obbi Ebbe (University of Tennessee), who kindly agreed to prepare the section history, plans to have his initial report available at the 2007 business meeting submitted the final report in Nov. 2008 and it has been subsequently posted in the ACJS-IS website.  Throughout the year, our section listserv (housed at John Winterdyk’s school) was used to keep section members informed of grant opportunities, position announcements, and other items of interest to the membership. John’s school also developed a new webpage and his school will host and maintain the webpage for the IS section throughout the tenure of his Chair position with the IS. The website will be relocated to another site after the March 2009 meeting.  In 2008 we increased membership (paid members) from 132 to 152 (regular membership) and for students from 20 to 35. A number of the new memberships were obtained through the information table set up at the Cincinnati meeting. Based on discussions at the 2008 AGM, it was agreed not to have a formal both in Boston as the results were not seen to be productive for the time commitment required. Other options for recruiting (e.g., emailing existing members to encourage others to join) were presented and acted upon.

 INFORMATION ITEM In 2005 the International Section affiliated with the International Journal of Comparative Criminology. The affiliation did not require members to subscribe to the journal, it simply made the journal available to section members at a reduced rate. Unfortunately, the journal’s International Section 2009 Annual Report, p. 7

publisher, deSitter, decided to sell the journal and as a result there have been no issues published for the past year. This has not negatively affected section members any more or less than any other subscribers to the journal, but it is rather embarrassing for the section. In Dec. of 2007 the Chair was informed that the sale of the journal to Sage Publications feel through. The publisher of the journal was subsequently decided to not continue with the journal. This turn of events will be shared with the International Section members during our annual 2008 business meeting. Subsequently, throughout the later part of 2008, the IS Chair with the support of the Executive Board approached several journals and finally came to an agreement with the International Criminal Justice Review journal (SAGE). Relevant paperwork was then forwarded to Mittie for confirmation in January, 2009. Members agreed to optionally subscribe to the online version for an annual fee of $10.

Elections: All positions have been filled until March 2009. In January 2009, a voting ballot was sent out to all members with two persons running for Vice-Chair, 4 persons for Executive Board positions, and one person for Secretary position. At the time of preparing this report, the results had not been finalized but will be available for the Boston meetings.

Awards: The 2008 G.O.W. Mueller Award Committee (Alida Merlo---serving as committee Chair, Dorothy Bracey, and Harry Dammer) and solicited nominations during Fall 2008 and made their selection in December, 2008. The 2009 G.O.W. Mueller Award will be presented to James Finckenauer at the 2009 International Section Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March XXth.

Plans for the Coming Year: ACJS Policies (No. 500.02 / I.C) requires that at Section meetings held during the Annual Meeting, the Section shall establish priorities for the coming year. A list of those priorities are to be submitted to the ACJS Executive Board for approval prior to taking action on those priorities. Although subject to modification by the IS Executive Board at it annual meeting on March 14XX, 2009, the following are likely to included among IS priorities. Prior to taking any action, the final list will be submitted to the ACJS Executive Board in an amended annual report.  Select 2009 recipient for the G.O.W. Mueller Award.  Assure that an award luncheon is planned for and scheduled at the 2009 annual meeting.  Consider finding sponsors (e.g., publishers or graduate programs) for the annual luncheon.  Strike a nomination committee to nominate/solicited candidates for 2009-2011.  Increase membership in the International Section with an emphasis on attracting more students. In addition, interest was expressed in trying to expand our membership outside of North America.  Explore the option of affiliating the IS with a ‘new’ journal.  Identify a theme and finalize plans for a 2009 section sponsored panel/roundtable.  Prepare, and distribute to members, a report on the history of the International Section.  Consider ways to provide pedagogical content to the Section's website and/or newsletter in order to assist instructors seeking information about effective teaching techniques and topics for comparative/international justice courses.  Explore the interest in creating an electronic newsletter for the section.  Have a table at the 2009 American Society of Criminology (Nov. 4-7th, Philadelphia) meeting and consider distributing IS membership flyers and general information (e.g., journal membership) at the 2009 European Society of Criminology (Lujubljana, Slovania from Sept. 9-12th).
