COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an introductory course for students who want a general overview of small business management in the United States. Topics include entrepreneurship, business integrity and ethics, decision making, planning, management, marketing, financing and legal issues in business. Please refer to www.assist.org and http://uctransfer.universityofcalifornia.edu to determine transferability of this course to the UC System, California State University System and/or private colleges.

COURSE OBJECTIVES Top management and business entrepreneurs need a good working knowledge of small business management principles and the detailed mechanics of initiating a small business. Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

 Define small business in the United States  List individual small firm advantages, rewards and requirements  Explain the steps in business planning and how to develop a comprehensive business plan  Describe the small business manager’s philosophy, training, responsibilities, activities and chance for success  Identify the detailed mechanics of initiating a small business  Correlate the interrelationship and importance of sufficient capital and accurate record keeping  Plan for necessary financial management systems in a small business  Discuss equity and debt sources of financing for small business

GRADING RUBRIC/ POINTS DISTRIBUTION Letter What it Looks Like? Grade A 90% of assignments are accurate and complete. Submitted assignments show student has 100 – 90 knowledge, comprehension, application, and synthesis of Introductory Small Business Management Concepts. B 80% of assignments are accurate and complete. Submitted assignments show student has 89 – 80 knowledge, comprehension, application, and synthesis of Introductory Small Business Management Concepts. C 70% of assignments are accurate and complete. Submitted assignments show student has 79 – 70 knowledge, comprehension, application, and synthesis of Introductory Small Business Management Concepts. D 60% of assignments are accurate and complete. Submitted assignments show student has 69 – 60 knowledge, comprehension, application, and synthesis of Introductory Small Business Management Concepts. F Student participation and assignments are too minimal to evaluate. 59 and below

ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES AND FORMAT A hardcopy of all assignments must be submitted on the due date as outlined in the syllabus. If a student has an excused absence, he/she may turn in assignments one day late, with special permission from the instructor. Otherwise, NO LATE WORK will be accepted.

*ATTENDANCE* If absence is unavoidable, the student should notify the instructor that same day (by email and/or telephone) and an excused absence may be recorded. No more than two excused absences may be allowable during the semester. All subsequent absences will be considered “unexcused” absences. For each excused absence after the first two, and/or for each unexcused absence, the student’s grade may be lowered by ten percent (10%). After three unexcused absences, a student may be automatically dropped from the class roll. A student that arrives late for class may be considered tardy. If he/she does not arrive before 6:15 pm, he/she may receive a tardy and four tardies may be considered an unexcused absence.

PLAGIARISM Plagiarism occurs when a student misrepresents the work of another as his or her own. Plagiarism may consist of using the ideas, sentences, paragraphs, or the whole text of another without appropriate acknowledgement, but it also includes employing or allowing another person to write or substantially alter work that a student then submits as his or her own. Any
