Geology Houston Cole Library Collection Assessment Submitted by Paula J. Barnett-Ellis February 2007
Introduction
Based on guidelines provided by the WLN Collection Assessment Services, which provide a framework within which to evaluate a library's current holdings and the level of activity at which the collection is being developed, the Geology collection is rated an overall 3aP (Basic Study or Instructional Support Level, predominately English). Refer to the Geology conspectus sheets and checklist analysis for a more detailed examination of the library's holdings.
Holdings
The Geology collection contains 5, 547 titles in the Library of Congress Classifications QC 801-999 and QE 1-999 with supporting titles in GE25-199. These levels are adequate to support the two-semester sequence of geology courses and minors in related subject areas offered through the Physical and Earth Sciences department. In addition, there are 117 Net Library titles in these subject areas integrated into the library online catalog. The number of titles for each subject area is listed below:
LC Category Print NetLibrary Totals Class Holdings E-books GE Environmental Sciences 243 41 284 QC Physics 1,205 39 1,244 QE Geology 3,982 37 4,019 Total 5,430 117 5,547
(Note: The QE totals vary greatly from the last assessment, due to an error in counting using a different system. Therefore, it is not possible to determine how the number of titles has changed.)
Supplemental Support
Holdings in the related subject collections of Biology, Chemistry, General Works, Geography, Physics, and Technology provide additional support to the Geology Collection. The collection is further supplemented by print and online holdings of U.S. Geological Survey publications such as the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories (Hayden Survey), USGS Monograph Series, the USGS Professional Papers Series and the Geological Society of America’s Geology of North America Series.
1 Titles Added/Titles Published
Books
The library’s collecting level was measured against the Blackwell’s All Publishers Approval Plan Coverage. The average percentage added from 2001 to 2005 is .070%. This rate falls within the guidelines of the recommended collecting level to maintain a 2a level collection which is below 5%. Blackwell’s figures contain a large number of physics books, some outside the scope of the Library of Congress classification for this assessment, and some are not collected in numbers as large as Blackwell listed.

Periodicals and Serials Assessment
The Geology collection contains a total of four current print periodicals in the classifications QE and QC 801-999, along with print subscriptions to general science journals that cover related subjects. These are supplemented by access to more than 250 full-text titles related to the subject areas encompassing Geology, Earth Sciences, and Environmental Sciences through electronic databases. See table below. A list that provides a sampling of the available print and online periodicals is also attached.

Access to Electronic Resources (Defined Access)
The library's defined access is rated a 3aP. Access is provided to an extensive collection of remotely accessible electronic resources, including bibliographic tools, texts, indexes, journals, etc. Most of the electronic journal titles are integrated, analyzed, and accessible through the online Voyager catalog. These sources encompass titles available through various aggregator databases, e-book collections, appropriate websites, documents, and e-journals.
Within this field, the library provides access to the Elsevier Science Direct database, which offers more than a quarter of the world's scientific, medical and technical information online in over 2,000 peer-reviewed journals, hundreds of book series, handbooks and reference works. With over 100 full text titles encompassing Earth and Planetary Sciences, Atmospheric Science, Geochemistry/Petrology, Oceanography,
4 Geophysics, Paleontology and Stratigraphy. Further, the Wiley InterScience database provides access to journals in Earth and Environmental Science. Subcategories include Geology, Environmental Science and Meteorology and Climatology.
Access to full text journals in earth sciences is also available through several of the library's general periodical databases; including Gale’s Expanded Academic ASAP and EBSCO’s Academic Search Premier.
Integrated into the library’s catalog and home page are web sites that offer free access to full-text articles, such as BioMed Central (http://www.biomedcentral.com/), PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/) and HighWire Press (http://highwire.stanford.edu/). However, it should be noted that there may be a delay of six months to a year before full text is released. In addition, access is provided through the library catalog to large numbers of open access science journals, which may be located through portals such as the Directory of Open Access journals. http://www.doaj.org/. Subject specialist librarians also review and recommend World Wide Web sites for inclusion in the Voyager catalog.
Summary
A. Monographic Holdings
Strengths: The Geology collection is more than adequate to support the Geology course sequence offered by the Geography department, and related minor sequences. Each of the following areas were ranked at least 3E or above (Basic Study or Instructional Support Level): Meteorology (General), Climatology, Geology (General), Regional Geology (overall), Petrology, Seismology and Paleontology.
Weaknesses: Some monograph holdings remain at the level they were at the last assessment. These areas are Regional Geology in the following regions - Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia, Arctic, Antarctic and Atlantic, Pacific, Indian & Arctic Oceans, need updating and development. Holdings in the area of stratigraphy in the Precambrian, Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras are smaller than those of the Cenozoic era. The Geological maps area also remains at the level of the last assessment, although it is supplemented by the Geography Department’s map collection.
B. Periodicals
Strengths: Including links to journals in the online catalog has made it easier for patrons to find electronic journals. In addition, the library subscribes to an electronic resource access and management service called Serials Solutions. Through this service patrons can determine if the library subscribes to a particular journal in print and in which database it
5 is contained. The library provides access to all but one of the basic periodicals recommended by Magazines for Libraries' 13th edition for the subject areas. Also, some titles recommended by Magazines for Libraries are available in full text via HighWire Press, and have been added to the library's online catalog.
The print periodical holdings of several specialized journals in LC classifications QC 801-999 and QE, along with general science periodicals such as Science, Nature, and the American Journal of Science, supplemented by online periodicals, are adequate to support the minor in Geology.
Weaknesses: No identifiable weaknesses in this area within the scope of the curriculum.
Recommendations: Maintain our current subscription levels to online periodical databases that cover Geology and earth science related subjects. Continue to generate URL report to check for changed links to free Internet titles.
C. Nonprint media
Holdings in this area are small, and some items are not current. The numbers have changed little since the last assessment in 2001. We currently have 31 titles, and had 24 in the earlier assessment.
Recommendations: Acquire some updated material to replace/enhance those in earth sciences and climatology that we currently hold.
D. Electronic Resources (Defined Access)
Strengths: The Elsevier Science Direct database provides access to citations, abstracts, and full text from thousands of journals, as well as conference proceedings, etc. in science related fields. Wiley InterScience and general subject databases provide access to many more earth sciences and related subject periodicals. Appropriate Web sites have been added to the online catalog.
In addition, web sites that offer free access to full-text articles, such as BioMed Central (http://www.biomedcentral.com/), PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/) and HighWire Press (http://highwire.stanford.edu/) are integrated into the library’s catalog and home page. However, it should be noted that there may be a delay (embargo) of six months to a year before full text is released.
6 Weaknesses Web sites and electronic periodicals that come to the subject librarians’ attention need to be added to the online catalog for easier patron access. The possible embargo to full text access for “free” titles is also a concern.
Recommendations Internet sites on Geology and earth sciences should continue to be evaluated and added to the online catalog on a regular basis.
