Please remember that the purpose of this newsletter is to keep librarians, historians, archivists, genealogists, archaeologists, educators at all levels, and those in other allied fields informed of what is going on that may be helpful in these fields so they may pass this information on to other interested parties in their locations.

South Texas is being broadly defined as beginning in Val Verde County in the west; moving east to Austin (Travis County); and then southeast through Caldwell, Lavaca, Jackson, and Calhoun counties to the Gulf of Mexico.

I am willing to include important events or acquisitions from other areas, in some instances, if they may be of particular usefulness to those in our area. News from our neighboring Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila would also be welcome.

Los Bexareños Genealogy Society

Meetings are normally held at 9:30 a.m. every first Saturday of the month on the first floor, Main Auditorium, of the San Antonio Public Library, 600 Soledad Street, San Antonio, Texas. Visitors are always welcome to attend. Membership is not required. Speakers at the meetings are people with a passion for history, professional historians, genealogists, archaeologists and researchers.

The next meeting of Los Bexareños will be on Saturday, September 6, 2008.

Speaker: Raul A. Ramos

Topic: The Transition: Bejareños to Tejanos We are proud to have San Antonio native, Raul A. Ramos, to be our guest speaker for September. He is the author of Beyond the Alamo: Forging Mexican Ethnicity in San Antonio, 1821-1861. Dr. Ramos is a graduate of Princeton University and Yale University, where he earned his PhD in history. He was a Fellow at the Willam Clements Center and for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University from 2000-2001. His lecture will center on how Los Bejareños became Tejanos. His courses concentrate on historical processes such as conquest, colonization, social formations, migrations, and cultural change.

Help for the beginning genealogists. The Society assists individuals in getting started with genealogical research through beginner's workshops. Beginners also receive assistance from the more experienced members of the Society. Currently we are offering assistance by appointment only and on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm at the following location: The San Antonio Genealogical & Historical Society 911 Melissa Drive, San Antonio, TX 78213

Victoria County Genealogical Seminar October 4, 2008

The Victoria County Genealogical Society is proud to announce the upcoming seminar on October 4, 2008 in Victoria, Texas. Our featured speaker will be the noted Christine Rose, CG, CGL, FASG. Ms. Rose has delivered hundreds of lectures in a variety of locations. She was on the faculty of the National Institute of Genealogical Research in Washington, DC and has for many years been an instructor and coordinator for Samford University in their Institute of Historical and Genealogical Research. She has also been interviews on a number of television and radio programs.

The Salem witchcraft events began in late February 1692 and lasted through April, 1693. All told, at least twenty-five people died: nineteen were executed by hanging, one was tortured to death, and at least five died in jail due to harsh conditions. Over 160 people were accused of witchcraft, most were jailed, and many deprived of property and legal rights.

FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records. It is a part of the FreeUKGEN family, which also includes FreeCEN (Census data) and FreeREG(Parish Registers). The recording of births, marriages and deaths was started in 1837 and is one of the most significant resources for genealogical research. The transcribing of the records is carried out by teams of dedicated volunteers and contains index information for the period 1837- 1983.
