Algebra balance: Virtual manipulative
Introduction: Open up the applet at http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/NAV/frames_asid_201_g_4_t_2.html? open=instructions&from=category_g_4_t_2.html and read through the instructions on the right bar before you begin.
Problems:
1. Have the applet generate at least four problems for you to work through and observe the types of problems it gives you.
2. Write a problem that cannot be solved with the balance beam and explain why.
3. What kinds of problems cannot be solved with the balance beam?
Reflection:
After you have worked through the problems, fill out the applet rubric. Also answer the following:
1. How did your prior knowledge about algebra affect the way you used the manipulative? 2. Did your work with the concrete manipulative help or hinder your use of the virtual manipulative? Explain. 3. Which did you like better: virtual or concrete? 4. Would you use these manipulatives in your classroom? When? Before or after your students started learning the algebra concepts? Explain.
