HOMER E. KENDALL, CITY FIREMAN, IS VICTIM OF INJURY

Autopsy Reveals Inflammation of Brain; Fell from Ladder

WAS 37 YEARS OF AGE

A traumatic inflammation of the brain, said by physicians to have developed from an injury received some time ago, resulted in the death of Homer E. Kendall, aged 37 years, of 414 Fisher Avenue, Kernville, a city fireman, at 10:30 o’clock yesterday morning at his home.

The brain condition was revealed by an autopsy performed by Dr. James E. Rishell of the South Side and Drs. Schlesinger and Orris of the Windber Hospital staff.

Kendall is said to have fallen from a ladder while working at headquarters of the fire department in the Public Safety Building. It is thought he might have injured his spine at that time. The physicians also had a report of a back injury he received while cranking a truck.

The well-known fireman had been off duty for several weeks, during which time he received treatment at the Windber Hospital. He returned home about a week ago, apparently much improved in condition, but he suffered a relapse last week and his death followed a period of coma.

Homer E. Kendall was born December 1, 1897, in Sandyvale, W. Va. He was a son of John W. and Linnie (Roach) Kendall, now residing in Derwent, O. A sister, Mrs. Harvey Wade of Milfield, O., also survives, in addition to his widow, the former Rose A. Burkhart, and stepdaughter, Sarah Witt.

The body was at the mortuary of H.M. Picking & Sons today and funeral services will be held tomorrow evening, at the Kendall home by Rev. Dr. W.K. Anderson. The body will be taken to Cambridge, O., for burial there Wednesday.

Homer E. Kendall joined the Johnstown Fire Department April 12, 1920, and was first assigned to Truck Company No. 1 on Vine Street, which later became Headquarters Company with completion of the Public Safety Building. He had been assigned for a period within the last year to Engine Company No. 5 in Morrellville, but for a long time had driven the large pumper at Headquarters Company.

Fire headquarters will be draped for a period of 30 days as a mark of respect.
