Mrs. Logan Conference Time: Gold 3 and Blue 4

6th Grade Glimpse February 6 – February 10

Science: Joining the science department this semester is student teacher, Mr. Krause. This week we will continue our Rocks and Minerals unit. Students will be able to identify igneous rocks as well as how they are formed. Students will also be able to describe the components of soil and factors that influence soil. This unit is greatly supported by our textbooks. Please encourage students to check one out if needed. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me. This week, we will begin with “The Mysterious Mr. Lincoln”, focusing on characterization and vocabulary. In celebration of Black History Month, we will analyze the article, “Separate but Never Equal”, comparing and contrasting two monumental court cases. Accelerated Math: Students took their Acuity Predictive C test this past week. The 6th grade students have improved tremendously from the beginning of the year to now. Keep up the hard work! In Accelerated Math, students will continue studying data by looking at line plots, frequency tables, histograms, and stem & leaf plots. Students will also briefly review circle graphs, bar graphs, and pictographs. 6th Grade Math: In 6th Grade Math, students will continue with chapter 5. Students will first spend time reviewing how to subtract mixed numbers when they need to borrow, and then move on to multiplying and dividing both fractions and mixed numbers. Communication Arts: Spelling Lesson 11 will begin Monday. This is a review unit of lessons 6-10. The test will be on Friday and will be in a multiple choice format. We will begin working on prepositions and will continue to focus on using details from text to support answers given. Reminder: All homework assignments that receive a grade below a C may be redone for half credit. Assignments should be asked for that day and are due the next class time. Social Studies: Students will be able to examine and compare ancient river civilizations, China. This week students will take a test on ancient China. For Extra Credit, both signatures must be present and the glimpse needs to be returned to Mrs. Logan no later than Tuesday, February 7, 2012 by 3:15 Counselor’s Corner: Our Character Education Trait of the Month is Tolerance, being non-judgmental of the uniqueness of others. This month’s classroom guidance lessons will discuss conflict management, an important skill for all of our students to learn and utilize. These lessons will encourage students to identify and practice important skills needed in working out conflicts. This upcoming week, Student Council members will be selling Valentines for students to send to each other at school. The cost of a valentine will be 25¢ and can be purchased before school by a Student Council member. [email protected]

Physical Education: The student will be able to identify the causes of air, water, and land pollution. They will be able to describe what happens to garbage after it is thrown away, and explain how they can help protect the environment. In PE the students will be incorporating the rules of racquet sports. [email protected] [email protected]

Health Enrichment: The student will be able to discuss the dangers of alcohol and show what they have learned by filling out a study guide and then taking a test on Wednesday. The student will then begin discussion on the dangers of illegal drugs, beginning with marijuana. [email protected] Coach Sears

Art, Graphics, and Computer Literature: Half of the students in the class have completed their plaster casting of their masks. Next week the other half the class will complete theirs. The students work in partner groups so they will be finished with that next class. They will need to bring a towel, a wash cloth, and something to keep their hair out of their face (headband, clips, or hair pins) for the day they apply the plaster gauze to their faces. This is a messy project that they apply Vaseline to their faces and then apply plaster gauze over that for their face casting. They will need the wash cloths to clean up after they remove the mask from their faces and the towels to rest their heads on while they have this applied. RISE: Students will begin planning and constructing a model castle by viewing David MacCauley’s video “Castle” and by researching concentric castle plans. Each student will be required to turn in a castle plan with labels using vocabulary words. Lesson objectives, suggested resources, and scoring guide are on Mrs. Fuller’s teacher page at www.huskers.k12.mo.us under the ‘academics’ tab.

Keyboarding: For the next two weeks students will be working on Section 1: Lessons 6 - 10 covering: V,W,G,B,U,Q, Comma, Period, Left/Right shift keys. These lessons are due February 10. FACS: We are continuing the Textiles unit. Students will begin by doing a plastic canvas project. Mrs. Goodman

Vocal: Sixth grade students are working on several pieces of music as well as theory worksheets. Both classes have completed worksheet #13, Melody Review. Students are studying the notes on the treble and bass clef. Please contact me if you have any questions. [email protected]
