Board of Trustees of John Wood Community College Counties of Adams, Pike, Hancock, Calhoun

Date: 05.21.14 BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING From: Dr. David Schachtsiek, Vice President for Instruction RE: Curriculum Committee Report

The meeting convened at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20 with Mr. Reggie Coleman, Mr. Dene Lambkin, Dr. David Shinn, Mrs. Pam Foust, Dr. David Schachtsiek, Mr. Mike Elbe, and Mrs. Nici Woodyard present.

Curriculum items discussed included curriculum additions and changes in the areas of Logistics and Manufacturing.

 Logistics Operation Management: Dr. Schachtsiek explained the proposed new courses and programs to the committee which led to a discussion on curriculum sharing with other colleges related to grants. This Logistics curriculum was developed as part of the Round 3 TAA MRTDL Grant (Mississippi River Transportation, Distribution & Logistics) The grant is in consortium with 9 different community colleges that all fall along the Mississippi River. The focus of each school varies depending on the economy in that area. For example, while we’re partnering with Western Kentucky to offer a Logistics Operation Management curriculum, other schools within the consortium are focusing on truck driver training, barge trafficking, distribution, etc. This also led to a discussion on the importance of finding creative ways of bringing new people into our community. Mr. Lambkin also shared and discussed his idea of a community wide mentoring program.

 Manufacturing: The group discussed changes to the college’s manufacturing curriculum. The new Manufacturing Technology degree will consist of a set of required core courses, the required general education courses, and four sets of specialized areas of which students will choose two. As students work to complete the new Manufacturing Technology degree, they will also end up with three separate certificates based on the specialized areas they choose within the degree.

 Miscellaneous: Dr. Schachtsiek gave an update on our Truck Driver Training program. They are currently looking at reducing the size of the fleet where we currently have 12 trucks and 12 trailers. The college is looking for grant money or donations to fund the cost of simulators that could be used by the TDT program as well as for other types of training such as school bus training or senior citizen bus transportation. The college is also working with Central High School

May Board of Trustees Regular Meeting 2014 to offer a dual credit TDT course for their high school seniors and the plan is to try and extend this concept to other nearby schools.
