Meredith Hooper April 4, 2012 Assignment #3

-These centers would best be suited for fourth or fifth graders and would take place at the end of the year. I have decided to incorporate five different activities from various units that students have learned about throughout the year. This allows the children to work on skills they may not have touched base with for quite some time, help improve skills they help with, and not have to worry about doing something new at the end of the year. -The equipment needed includes: floor mats, basketballs, smaller soft/foam balls (various sizes for baseball station and volleyball station), plastic bowling pins & plastic bowling balls, and a volleyball net. -The length of the class session is 45 minutes long and will take place in the gym.

Introductory Activity The introductory activity will start as soon as students enter the gym and will last for five minutes. Once students enter the gym they will jog around the parameter for one minute, skip for one minute, gallop for one minute, do lunges for one minute, and then walk around the gym for the remaining minute. I will let the class know when to change what they are doing. Once the five minutes are up, I would instruct the class to go to their designated spots on the floor to begin their fitness activity.

Fitness Activity The fitness activity will include a series of stretches. Students will sit on the floor, put both legs out in front of them and try to touch their toes. Then they will do stretches for each leg. Students will stand up and do the same stretches. Other fitness warm ups will include: jumping jacks, crunches, push ups, and stretching arms across their body.

Stations The students will have done the stations before, so I will only need to briefly go over them. I will tell the class that we are doing various stations that we have participated in throughout the year. They are each from different units, so students have equal opportunities to do well at each station. I will go over what students are to do at each station and ask if they have any questions. Each station will last approximately five minutes a piece. -The first station relates to the basketball unit. Students will each be given a ball. They will stand at various points around the gym (indicated by black tape) and try to make baskets. Once they make a basket from one point, they will move on to another. There will be more places to make baskets from than students, that way children won’t be swarming over a particular area/waiting for a certain spot. 116.7 Knowledge and Skills. Movement (K) demonstrate competence in manipulative skills in dynamic situations such as overhand throw, catch, shooting, hand dribble, foot dribble, kick, and striking activities such as hitting a softball; -Station number two will be a catching and throwing station. Students will be assigned a partner. They will start by standing two feet away from each other, throwing and catching a foam ball to each other. Each time the ball is caught by both students, each child will step back a foot and throw/catch the ball again. If one of the children misses the catch, they will each step forward one foot. 116.7 Knowledge and Skills. Movement (K) demonstrate competence in manipulative skills in dynamic situations such as overhand throw, catch, shooting, hand dribble, foot dribble, kick, and striking activities such as hitting a softball; -The third station is a gymnastics station. Students may not have gone over this unit for quite some time, so it will be very basic. They are to see if they remember how to do various activities such as forward rolls, backward rolls, and walking across a balance beam (which may be a piece of tape on the floor). Students may manage their own time and decide how long they want to spend trying to do each activity. 116.4 Knowledge and Skills (1) Movement (H) demonstrate smooth transition from one body part to the next in rolling activities such as side roll, log roll, balance/curl, and roll/balance in a new position; and 116.5 Knowledge and Skills (1) Movement (D) demonstrate moving in and out of a balanced position with control; -The fourth station covers the striking unit. Students will take turn knocking down pins with “bowling balls”. They will try to bowl and achieve the highest score by knocking down more pins than the other people in their group. Students will take rotate positions, so that one person is always picking up the pins for another, one is keeping score, and others are bowling. They will try their best to bowl strikes and spares, but are just encouraged to do the best that they can. 116.6 Knowledge and Skills (1) Movement (K) demonstrate key elements in manipulative skills such as volleying, hand dribble, foot dribble, punt, striking with body part, racquet, or bat. (This was the closest TEKS I could find that related to bowling.) -The final center is based on the volleyball unit. Students will be split up into two small teams within their group (most likely 2-3 to a team) and play a small game of volleyball. They will mostly work on hitting the ball over the net to the opposite team & trying to score. 116.6 Knowledge and Skills (2) Movement (A) Identify similar movement elements in sports skills such as underhand and overhand throwing and volleyball serving.

While my class is doing the stations, I will be walking around the room and observing their behavior. I will only correct students if they are doing a task completely wrong, by guiding them in the right direction. I will also help them if they ask or tell me that they do not remember how to do a certain activity, but I will let them know that they can ask their peers in their group.

Closing Activity Since this lesson will be at the end of the year, students may be stressed with final projects and other things going on in their classrooms. For a closing activity, we can discuss stress as a class and talk about what is currently going on in their lives that may be stressing them (school related). Then, we can briefly discuss how to manage stress.

I decided to make most of the tasks a bit more challenging than I had originally planned. Since the children are older, I feel like they will be able to accomplish more. I would just be sure to tell the students that they do not have to accomplish all of these tasks in one day, they don’t even have to accomplish them before the year is over. The tasks are more for personal progress than for a grade. I want the students to go above and beyond what they think they can do.
