Fernbank Receives Funding to Provide Science Education for Metro Atlanta Students

Newell Rubbermaid provides $50,000 donation to set nearly 25,000 students on the “Pathway to Success”

WHAT: As part of its Investing in Community corporate philanthropy initiative, Newell Rubbermaid, a global marketer of consumer and commercial products, has pledged $50,000 to benefit Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Pathways to Success: Building Scientific Achievements program. Fernbank designed the program to encourage students to become excited about science and cultural studies while also providing underserved youth with equitable educational challenges and the opportunity to succeed in school.

WHEN: Newell Rubbermaid’s support of the Pathways to Success initiative will reach students throughout the 2010-2011 school year.

WHO: The Pathways to Success initiative impacts Atlanta’s Title I schools, helping students from low- and moderate-income populations, and will directly serve nearly 25,000 students in elementary through high school in Metro Atlanta, where the company’s global headquarters is located. Taught by experienced scientists, Fernbank’s curriculum-focused programs inspire students to excel in science through interactive experiences in ecology, biology, geology, paleontology, archaeology and anthropology.

WHERE: The grant from Newell Rubbermaid will help fund Fernbank’s school-outreach and on-site educational programs in Atlanta such as Outdoor Classrooms, Exploratory Science Classes, and Archaeology for Kids!, a new outdoor dig site.

WHY: Georgia test scores show there is a pressing need to further develop students’ scientific and cultural knowledge as it relates to academic performance. Prevailing research indicates that the expanded learning opportunities museums provide have substantial academic, social and health benefits that promote students’ success and leadership.

Newell Rubbermaid’s donation to Fernbank Museum aligns with the company’s focus on Growing Up, one of three focus areas for its Investing In Community corporate philanthropy initiative. Donations made under this pillar are intended to provide children with a positive start and the tools to succeed in adulthood.
