Welcome to Ward Six Welcome to Ward Six we are located on corridor C at Grantham and District Hospital. Please park in the car parks located through the Maternity entrance not the A and E entrance.

The ward has 26 patients and we are gastro and respiratory

The ward is divided into three teams:-

Blue- 1 bays of 6male patients and 1 male patient side rooms

Green- 2male patient side rooms, a bay of 6 female patients

Yellow- 2 female patient side room and 1 bay of 6 female patients

The ward is divided in this way to provide privacy and dignity to our patients by providing them with same-sex accommodation.

Doctors

We have 3 consultants who work on Ward Two and our patients are split between them depending on their reason for admission.

Dr J Campbell (JCA) is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine. His ward round are Tuesday and Friday from 0900.

DR Matsiko (SKM) is a consultant in Gastro his ward rounds will be Tues and Thurs from 14.30pm.

Dr Mahmood (TAM) is a consultant in Gastro his ward rounds will be Monday and Thursday from 10am.

All Consultants have Junior Doctors based on the ward from 0900 to 1700 Monday to Friday. Outside these hours we can contact the On Call Doctor.

RESPIRATORY

Develop you knowledge of the respiratory system.

Be involved in the care of patients with Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Pleural Effusions, Pulmonary Embolus (PE) and cancers of respiratory tract.

Assist, under supervision of mentor, doctors when inserting chest drains or performing pleural aspirations.

Observe care of patients with tracheostomy.

Participate in the care of patient during oxygen assessments, blood gas analyses, oxygen and nebuliser therapy, humidified oxygen and suction

Insight visits- Xray – CT guided lung biopsy and chest x-rays Daycase – Bronchoscopy Medical Physics – Spirometry Spend time with Physio, COPD nurse Observe role of Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist and Macmillan team

ENDOCRINOLOGY

Develop your knowledge of Endocrine system.

Care for patients with Diabetes and Diabetic emergencies, Kidney Disease, thyroid and pancreatic disorders. Observe the use of Sliding Scale Insulin Infusions Insight visits- Diabetes Nurse Specialist Medical Physics- patients undergoing scans and biopsies Observe blood glucose monitoring

CARDIOLOGY

Develop knowledge of Cardiac system. Care for patients with Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation (AF), Angina and patients with pacemakers.

Observe role of Cardiac Rehab and Assessment nurses, Critical Care Outreach team (Year 3 only).

Insight visits- Medical Physics to observe ECHO (Echocardiogram)

GASTRO-ENTEROLOGY

Develop knowledge of Gastro Intestinal Tract.

Care for patients with G.I bleeds, liver disease, swallowing difficulties, infectious diseases such as Clostridium Difficile, cancers of G.I tract.

Observe and participate in the care of patients requiring, gastroscopy and colonoscopy, insertion of Nasogastric (NG) and PEG tubes, swallowing assessments, Barium enemas and swallows.

Insight visits- Dietician Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) Day Case- Colonoscopy

NEUROLOGICAL AND HEALTH CARE OF THE ELDERLY

Develop knowledge of nervous system and ageing process.

Participate in the care of patients following stroke, with M/S and Parkinson’s. Observe and participate in End of Life care and decision making

Insight visits- Physio Occupational Therapist Social Worker Intermediate Care Discharge Liaison Nurse (DLN) X-Ray- CT Scans Mental Health Liaison Nurse (MHLN) These are just some of the things you may have to opportunity to be involved in; this is dependent on the patients on the ward during your placement. Often unexpected opportunities can present themselves.
