U.S.S. WRIGHT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

We invite you to participate and share the memories of experiences aboard the U.S.S.Wright!

Become a member of the U.S.S. Wright Association; and attend our annual reunion held in a different city each year. This is your chance to renew friendships relive the days aboard and to meet Navy buddies who have served on the same ship.

HISTORY

The USS Wright Alumni Organization was founded in 1988 by sailors who served aboard her. The current membership exceeds more than 600 members. The purpose or our organization is to keep shipmates connected, to preserve the U.S.S. Wright history in the minds of the men who served aboard her, and to have a permanent record of her history to hand down to future association members. Spouses and/or guests are always invited.

The first U.S.S. Wright was the AZ-1, commissioned in 1921 as the “Lighter-Than- Air” Tender. It was phased out as a new ship, the seaplane tender in 1944, and then Redesignated as AG-79. In 1945, the ship was renamed the San Clemente, the USS Wright designation for a support carrier. The new carrier, U.S.S. Wright CVL-49, designated as a support carrier, was commissioned in 1947;after extensive modification, in 1962 she was commissioned as a Command Communication ship CC-2. She was finally decommissioned in 1970 and put in mothballs in Norfolk Virginia. She was sold to a Japanese company in 1978 and scrapped in 1984, a sad day indeed for the men who served aboard her. However, her history still lives in the hearts and minds of those who server their country aboard her.

While designated the Communications Command (CC-2) she was also designated as a National Emergency Command Post Afloat. She served the president and the Pentagon as a mobile floating communications post and Presidential Evacuation option.

TO BECOME A MEMBER

Fill out the form attached and return to us with your check for $20 (annual dues) in the addressed envelope. In order to be a voting member in the organization, the annual dues are required to be paid up to date as of December 31 each year. These annual dues are used to help organize the reunion, and have in many cases helped less fortunate members be able to stay in the organization.

The alumni reunions are planned at least a year in advance and held in a different city somewhere through the United States each year. This is done in order to allow members that live locally to attend at less cost. Suggestions are openly welcome at our annual meeting for new candidate sites for the reunion. After receiving your request for membership request, along with your annual dues, you will be placed on our mailing list to receive all future mailings on including our quarterly newsletter, reflecting the activities of the U.S. Wright Association and its members

Look over the names and addresses of the officers of the organization (also published in front of quarterly newsletter), and you will probably see someone you know.

Become a member and share your memories! Someone out there is looking for you also.

Ray Sheridan, President, USS Wright Alumni Association
