Announcements National Hydration Day—June 23, 2017 National Hydration Day is a good time to think about healthy habits for hydrating, especially after participating in sports activities. Voices for Healthy Kids offers a Healthy Drinks Toolkit that includes a sugary drink infographic. Penn State PRO Wellness has developed a Rethink Your Drink Infographic. And Salud America! provides an issue brief and infographics in English and Spanish explaining that increased consumption of sugary drinks by Latino children (ages 0-5) may be a reason they are more likely to be overweight than their peers.
2017 SHAC Award Winners The Texas Action for Healthy Kids announced the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Award winners. The great news is that 75 districts across Texas were nominated for creating and sustaining healthy schools! The 5 winning districts were chosen based on criteria including the number of active SHAC members, frequency of meetings, number of participating students and parents, and number of issue areas addressed during the school year. The 2017 winners are Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Comal ISD, Lampasas ISD, Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD, and Spring Branch ISD. Congratulations to these districts for their outstanding work!
Professional Development Opportunities Child Welfare Virtual Expo—July 13, 2017 From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CDT, the Capacity Building Center for States will host the Virtual Expo 2017. The Center for States supports public child welfare agencies in effectively initiating and sustaining change and innovation.
Funding Opportunities Empowered Communities Initiative (ECI) Program Independent school districts are eligible to apply for this cooperative agreement through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The ECI program is intended to provide support for minority and/or disadvantaged communities disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic, childhood/adolescent obesity, or serious mental illness. Applications are due by August 1, 2017.
1 Health Education 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book KIDS COUNT®, a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF), has ranked states annually on overall child well-being since 1990. The project uses an index of 16 key indicators—4 in each of the following 4 domains: economic well-being, education, health, and family and community. On the AECF website, you can access a section of the Data Book relating to each domain by clicking on the hyperlinks beneath “Data Book Quick Links.” For each domain, there is a color-coded U.S. map. For specific information about Texas, you can download the 2-page state profile.
Physical Education & Physical Activity 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee: Meeting 4 Registration is now open for the fourth public meeting of the Committee to develop the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has appointed 17 physical activity and health experts to serve on this committee. Join them via live webcast on July 19-21, 2017, to review the scientific evidence on physical activity and its benefits for health!
Nutrition Environment & Services Webinar: Team Up for Farm to School Success! The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will host this webinar on June 29, 2017, at 2:00-3:00 p.m. CDT. It will begin with reviews of the USDA Farm to School Planning Toolkit and Grant Program. Presenters will share their experiences on how to effectively plan, organize, and create engaging farm to school programs.
CEP Deadline: June 30, 2017 This is a reminder that the deadline for Local Education Agencies to submit applications to elect the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for School Year 2017- 2018 is June 30. Please refer to the Texas Department of Agriculture website.
Establishing Unpaid Meal Fee Policies The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) advocacy resource: Best Practices to Ensure Access and Prevent Stigma highlights best practices at the state and local levels to ensure that children receive the nutrition needed to learn at school. The handbook directs advocates to recently proposed legislation in different states, including Texas, for guidance. The FRAC guide also directs readers to U.S. Department of Agriculture resources pertaining to unpaid meal charges.
Health Services Webinar: Tools and Tactics for Trusted Adults—June 28, 2017 At 12:00-1:00 p.m. CDT, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy will host Updates From the Field. The webinar will present research from a yearlong effort to better understand how to support transition age youth (those aged 16-21) in foster care avoid an unplanned pregnancy. A new resource for informing and initiating discussions with youth of all ages will also be presented.
Guidelines-Based Asthma Care Webinar—June 28, 2017 At 1:00-2:00 p.m. CDT, the American Lung Association (ALA) will share their Asthma Care Coverage Project’s findings. These, along with available resources, can assist
2 stakeholders in increasing awareness of the gaps or deficiencies in state Medicaid coverage. Join the ALA, as it hosts A Comprehensive Look into Nationwide Medicaid Coverage and Barriers of Guidelines-Based Asthma Care.
Social & Emotional Climate NSAESC Mentoring Technical Assistance The National Student Attendance, Engagement, and Success Center (NSAESC) is working with The National Mentoring Partnership to offer no-cost training and technical assistance (TA) for schools/districts implementing the Success Mentors model. It addresses chronic absenteeism and/or promotes student engagement and achievement. Interested schools/districts must complete the online application. If accepted, up to 20 TA engagements will be available to schools/districts between June and September 2017, to help them prepare for the upcoming school year.
Physical Environment National Healthy Home Month Webinar—June 26, 2017 At 10:00-11:15 a.m. CDT, the National Healthy Homes Partnership will present Meeting the Challenges with Youth and Healthy Homes (see page 2). The webinar explores a national 4-H curriculum that teaches students in 4-H/afterschool programs (grades 4-6) about healthy homes and food safety.
Family Engagement Cheering on Your Child This post on The New York Times’ Motherlode blog gives six tips for how not to be like the father who broke the glass at his daughter’s hockey game. In addition to not yelling at your child, anyone else’s child or the referee, do not coach players when that is not your official role. Foremost the article recommends loving your child, and the sport if it comes naturally to you. Remember, if you are so invested in your child’s game that your behavior is turning heads, it may be time to tone it down!
