Course Description – An overview of the principals of sports broadcasting, as relayed by actual professionals who work in a Top 10 media market. Heavy emphasis on radio and television play by play and analysis, production, direction, sales and traffic. Insights on breaking in to the business, the importance of internships and building a network of colleagues is also reinforced.

Day and time: Course meets every Tuesday, beginning January 14th – 6pm to 8:50 pm in Apogee Stadium (except for the initial class). The Bill Mercer Press Club on the 5th level of the stadium’s west side will be utilized for class.

Course Objective: Teaching Radio/TV play by play and color commentary with additional material covering job opportunities in sports broadcasting. Class will rely heavily on guest lecturers. ACTUAL PLAY BY PLAY PERFORMANCE IS REQUIRED!

Text: “The Art of Sportscasting – How to Build a Successful Career” Tom Hedrick.

Materials: Students will be required to supply instructor with CD’s or Audio Wave files of play by play work. Recording devices may be checked out per RTVF availability. This will be reviewed at the first class!

Assignments:

1) Record Play by Play and Sportscasts. Students will be required to submit three (3) demos for evaluation. Additional tapes will be submitted for critique and instruction purposes only. This is your only graded tape, so be sure and submit your best work! 2) Television component relies on three (3) shifts for NTTV during the semester. These can be in front of or behind the camera. 3) One (1) essay paper, one page each in length, must be submitted during the semester which will review the lectures given by the guest lecturers. 4) Final will be based on questions from the guest lecturers and the text book.

Attendance: Miss three classes and you are out. NO SLEEPING IN CLASS! There has traditionally been high demand for this class, so if you decide early that this class is not what you expected, please drop it so that others might add.

Grades: These will be based on a combination of: attendance, effort to improve, ability to turn in the required assignments listed above and willingness to be engaged in question and answer portions of the class, especially as it regards our guest speakers.
