2 St Benet’s Hall

Benedictine monks have a long history at Oxford, going right back to the beginnings of the University. St Benet’s Hall itself was founded in 1897, and granted a licence to matriculate students in the University of Oxford in 1918. The Hall is owned by Ampleforth Abbey and governed by the St Benet’s Trust. The Fellowship currently has 12 members, and the Hall has ten lecturers, as well as the services of many tutors across the university.

Currently 70 female and male students, rising to 74 students for next academic year, study for undergraduate and graduate degrees in humanities and social science subjects: Classics; History; Oriental Studies; Theology; Theology and Philosophy; Philosophy, Politics and Economics, Masters in Business Administration and Masters in Public Policy. Benedictine ethos is central to the Hall and binds together staff and students who come from a variety of religious backgrounds or none.

The Hall has two buildings both located in the centre of Oxford; the first is on St Giles’ in a handsome Georgian Grade II listed building and the second is a Victorian villa in Norham Gardens. All first year students live in, as well as some finalists, some graduate students and the monastic community. Public life in the Hall revolves around the Refectory (where all eat at a common table) in St Giles’, Libraries, Calefactory and Solar, Chapel, and JCR. 3 St Benet’s Hall Management Team

The post-holders will be expected to interact daily with the administrative and management team which comprises the Master of the Hall (Professor Werner G Jeanrond), the Senior Tutor (Dr Santha Bhattacharji), the Hall Administrator (Ms Martina Stancheva), PA to the Master & Alumni Relations Officer (Ms Katy Griffiths) and the Bursar (Mr Steve Rumford). The successful candidates will be a de facto link between all senior members of the Hall and students.
