MEMORIAL PRESS 731 Walnut Street - P .O. Box 70 - Dayton, Indiana - 47941 (765) 296-3199) Web: www.daytonpres.org Pastor Justin: [email protected] Darlene : [email protected] June 2016 Pastor’s Epistle

Knowing that Elizabeth taught Sunday School when she was a teenager, I approached Delaney a few weeks ago to ask if she would be willing to fill in and teach our youngest Sunday School class. She replied that she would be happy to, but would be sad to miss the Senior High Sunday School Class because another longtime member of the church was coming in to be “interviewed”. Immediately sensing it was more important for her to attend the Senior High class than to be a substitute teacher, I told her that I felt she should go to her own class and that I would find someone else.

This was not the first person to be “interviewed” by the Senior High class this year. Several other adults with long time connections in the congregation have been “questioned” by our older youth as they learned more about them, and through their stories the history of our church. And each time this has happened, the feedback I’ve heard from the youth has been how much they enjoyed learning about the person as well as our beloved congregation!

I recently read an article about studies that showed how there is a connection between a person’s resilience and having a strong sense of “intergenerational self”. What this term means is how well one knows their family’s story. Examples of what knowing the ups and downs of their family’s narrative were; where their parents grew up, where their grandparents were from, notable accomplishments of family members as well as the setbacks and struggles the family has lived through. The article stated that this kind of narrative reveals to the person what they’re all about by having a sense of identity that is grounded in something larger then themselves.

After reading this article, it made me think of how much it described the family of faith at DMPC. Many of our members have active for many years, with their own children and grandchildren taking part with other multigenerational families in the congregation. I believe this is one of the reasons our congregation has been able to be a strong witness to God’s love in our community.

Although our modern world has increasingly placed strains on maintaining involvement with one’s congregation, I take heart knowing the our church continues to find its identity in the relationships we have with one another, which are centered in the relationship we all have with Jesus Christ. Let us continue to know who we are because our identity as a congregation is grounded in something larger than any one of us, and who that is, is in God. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.*

Blessings, Pastor Justin

This summer you have an opportunity to support the ongoing musical ministry of Memorial Presbyterian Church! A donation of $100 will be used to provide for our very talented organist Shellie, whose position is currently seasonal, to continue to play during the summer months. Your donation will be made in memory or honor of someone of your choosing. You may also choose several hymns to be sung which will be chosen at a later date! We will share for whom the music is being dedicated in memory or honor of in the worship bulletin as well as our monthly newsletter. PENTECOST OFFERING Thank you for your contributions to the Pentecost Offering. The collection on Change for Change day was $104.50. On Pentecost, additional offerings brought the total to: 144.50. Forty percent of this amount, or $57.80, will go toward our local mission: CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) program. Volunteers receive training to advocate in court and in the community for the needs and rights of children in foster care. Volunteers must be 21 years old or more and commit to 15 months of service. While the costs of the program are funded in various ways, donations are still needed to operate the program. For more information, visit here: https://www.tippecanoe.in.gov/445/Become-a-CASA-Volunteer The remaining sixty percent helps the Presbyterian Church (USA) encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. For example::  The Young Adult Volunteer program is a one year service opportunity for young adults from 19 to 30 years.  Ministries for Youth  Children at risk  Youth Triennium
