Role Overview:

As part of Data61's Engineering and Design team, you will assist our engineers and researchers in all facets of project delivery. You will help set up and advise projects in their initial development phases, as well as provide support during build and operational phases.

Part of Data61's core beliefs include letting developers choose the right tool for the job and explore new technologies. Therefore, your responsibilities may range anywhere from building a Jenkins Continuous Integration server on a local VM through to managing a multi-tenant Kubernetes cluster on multiple cloud providers. We primarily utilise Linux on Amazon Web Services, so experience with both is essential. For us, the willingness and ability to learn new skills and technologies is as important as experience.

Duties and Key Result Areas:  Design, build and operate distributed systems, primarily on Amazon Web Services.  Automate project deployment to cloud infrastructure.  Provide operational support including monitoring and incident response.  Liaise with developers and project managers to meet delivery requirements.  Develop and update documentation for procedural changes, new releases, and enhancements to systems.  Other duties as directed.

Selection Criteria:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed Pre-Requisites:  Education/Qualifications: A relevant Certificate or tertiary qualification in Computer Science or Engineering and/or equivalent relevant experience.  Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly and succinctly convey information and ideas to individuals and groups.  Behaviours: A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.  Adaptability: Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity and adapt to changing circumstances and new responsibilities.  Problem Solving: Proven ability to investigate underlying issues of complex and ill-defined problems and develop appropriate responses through abstract thinking and using creative solutions. Essential criteria  3+ years Amazon Web Services experience.  5+ years Linux systems administration experience.  Experience with configuration management tools such as Chef, Puppet or Ansible.  Experience with Continuous Integration build systems.  Experience with Docker including build, orchestration and operation.  Experience with common scripting languages.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable criteria  Familiarity with modern development practices such as Continuous Delivery.  Familiarity with emerging technologies, e.g. Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, Mesos etc.  Software engineering experience.
