HARTER SECREST & EMERY HONORS THREE ROCHESTER STUDENTS Annual essay contest encourages students in Grades 3-5 to see Dr. King’s dream in others
Rochester, New York, January 16, 2017 – Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, Rochester’s largest law firm, once again celebrated the spirit and message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with students from the Rochester City School District, announcing the winners of the firm’s 7th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest. Established by the Diversity Committee at Harter Secrest & Emery, the annual essay contest is open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students in the Rochester City School District. The topic of this year’s essay was to “discuss someone who is helping Dr. King’s dream come true and how.” A total of 76 essays from 18 classrooms throughout the district were submitted. The winners, chosen by Harter Secrest & Emery attorneys and staff, are: Jessia Breedy, 3rd Grade, World of Inquiry School #58 o Teacher: Jessica Flanders; Principal: Sheela Webster Lucy Case, 4th Grade, Frank Fowler School #52 o Teacher: Ana Millian-Holmes; Principal: Mary Aronson Linda Nguyen, 5th Grade, Clara Barton School #2 o Teacher: Dale Spafford; Principal: Pamela Rutland “The qualities that Dr. King articulated so eloquently in his speeches are as relevant today as they were during the course of his life. The students who participated in this year’s essay contest did a wonderful job of recognizing those important attributes in role models in their life and school,” said Megan K. Dorritie, Harter Secrest & Emery partner, who leads the firm’s Diversity Committee. “Harter Secrest & Emery is proud of the work these students and their teachers are doing in the classroom, and we are grateful to share this opportunity with students in the Rochester schools.” The winning student at each grade level received a personal prize and a $50 gift card, while their classroom will receive a $75 gift certificate for a pizza party. Each winning student’s teacher also received a $200 gift card to use toward supplies for his or her classroom. Additional pizza parties were Harter Secrest & Emery announces MLK essay contest winners – pg. 2 raffled off for all participating classes – one for each grade level – and a Certificate of Appreciation will be given to each participating class.
