Learning Outcomes: To assess student progress toward national/state content standards in the areas of physical activity and health-related fitness using a variety of strategies (e.g., fitness testing, activity logs/journals, technology, direct observation) and to modify planning, instruction, and the teaching-learning environment accordingly. Student performance will be assessed through the completion of a Fitnessgram/Activitygram assessment project. Students who earn at least 80% of the available points (16 out of a possible 20 points) will be considered to have attained mastery regarding this outcome. The instructional target is that 60% of the students or higher master the course outcome as previously defined.

Fitnessgram Case Study: The ABC County Middle School decided to use a Personal Fitness Theme to start the 2008-2009 school year. The school Wellness Committee recommends that each child participate in a variety of educational activities including fitness testing and physical activity tracking. They also strongly suggest that the students be fitness tested again at a later point in the fall term to measure for improvement and to make modifications to personal physical activity programs as needed. You were assigned to work with Mrs. Moore and Mr. Connor (both 8th grade teachers).

Mrs. Moore is very excited about the program and has agreed to use some of her class time to allow the students access to the school computer lab to enter their fitness test and physical activity data (please use the student view to enter all data for Mrs. Moore’s students). She plans to integrate that content into her math lessons.

Mr. Connor is less enthusiastic, but says that he is willing to help out. He doesn’t have the curricular space to take his students into the computer lab though, so you will need to enter all of the data for his class (please use the teacher view to enter all data for Mr. Connor’s’ students).

You will need to generate (a) Activity Log Reports (due 02/23/09), (b) Individual Activitygram Reports (due 03/04/09, (c) Individual Fitnessgram Reports and Class Summary Reports (due 03/25/09). Please e-mail those reports to the course instructor at [email protected] by the assigned deadline.

Data Entry & Analysis: Students will work individually to enter data using the Fitnessgram software. The data will be provided by the course instructor and will relate to the previously described school case study. The assignment involves the generation of individual and class reports using the following three functions of the software: Fitnessgram, Activitygram, and Activity Log.

Assignment Scoring:

5 = Report was complete, accurate, and submitted on time 4 = Report was complete and on time but included a few inaccuracies 3 = Report was complete and on time but included numerous inaccuracies 2 = Report was complete but late (work not turned in within 1 week of deadline will receive a zero) 1 = Report was incomplete (data missing from the report) 0 = Report was not submitted
