HERALD 5 FALL MEETING

HERALD 5 is a Christian based support group for homeschooling families. It is NOT an accountability/supervisory group.
By law, you are NOT required to be in a support group. This is for you and your family’s benefit only.
By law, you ARE required to be in an accountability/supervisory group in order to legally home school your children.
Requirements to be in H5: * Pay yearly dues which include membership within SCHEA or not; your choice. * Attend one or both large H5 meetings, either in the Fall or Spring. * Attend a minimum of 3 activities in your small group. * Complete 1 job throughout the school year; must be approved by your Small Group Leader, also known as the SGL.
SAFE in H5 is an accountability/supervisory group that you, as an H5 member, have available to you. However, you MUST sign up for SAFE separately. Your membership within H5 does NOT automatically make you a member of SAFE. The deadline for applying to SAFE is September 1st. The SAFE application can be accessed on the Herald 5 website, www.herald5.com. The application can be printed off and sent to: SAFE, PO Box 1743, Irmo, SC 29063, or printed off and brought to the Fall Meeting, August 8th. You are NOT required to be in SAFE to be in H5. There are many other accountability/supervisory groups available such as South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools, also known as SCAIHS, and others that are noted on the internet. Each of these have various fees and requirements so be sure to research which one will be a good fit for your homeschool. Who's Who in H5: Supervisory Council: Created to support the Leadership Team and to help keep us in line with the established By-Laws of H5. The members are:

Operations Coordinator: Lynn Swords – ([email protected]) Helps the Leadership Team Coordinator in handling the day to day operations and leadership in H5. Treasurer: Cheryl Porter – ([email protected]) Handles the money in H5. Data Base Coordinator: Crystal Milliken – ([email protected]) Keeps names and records of the members in H5. Also handles the large group communications throughout H5 via e-mail. Web Master: Crystal Milliken – ([email protected]) Handles the overall design and information input onto our website.

Other Terms to Know:
SCHEA: South Carolina Home Educators Association (www.schea.net) * Membership within this group provides you with information about up-to-date legislation that affects homeschoolers across the state, as well as a few other perks like discounts at some book stores, etc. * They also host an annual Homeschool Day at the Capitol in downtown Columbia.
HSLDA: Home School Legal Defense Association (www.hslda.org) * Protects your legal rights as a homeschooling family. * This is an excellent and highly recommended group to be a member of in order to protect your homeschool. Also, many accountability/supervisory groups require membership within HSLDA prior to becoming a member of that particular accountability/supervisory group. If you are in SAFE, you will receive a discount on your HSLDA membership fees.
