University Lutheran Church s2

WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH during this season of Pentecost as we remain open and receptive to how the Holy Spirit is moving in our lives to guide us in the way of truth, to give us the courage to live according to God’s will, and to grant us the peace of knowing that we always are in the loving presence of a good and gracious God. At the conclusion of our worship service, we will include a Celebration of Our Community. Following the last hymn, the congregation will be seated, and people who are celebrating a birthday or anniversary during this month of June, or any other award or milestone in their lives, will be invited to come forward for recognition and a supportive song of blessing.

WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LORD’S TABLE to receive God’s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the pastor. Children who commune at their home congregation are welcome to receive the elements. Please hold out your hand to let the minister know that you wish to receive communion. Parents who desire their children not to receive communion may bring them up to receive a blessing.

PLEASE INDICATE YOUR ATTENDANCE at worship today and your participation at the Lord’s Supper by completing the enclosed Worship Registration form and placing it in the offering plate. Please join us for fellowship and refreshments in the lounge after the service.

THERE ARE CHILDREN’S BAGS with bulletins and books available in the lounge and the narthex. They are hanging on the wall.

CHILD CARE is available in the Nursery for children of any age. Ask the usher for directions.

OUR PRAYERS are for our homebound, and for those in need of healing in body, mind or spirit. We also pray for the men and women of SHARE/WHEEL during this time that they are without shelter.

TEXTS FOR NEXT SUNDAY: 2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-15; Galatians 2:15-21; Luke 7:36-8:3.

1 Fourth Sunday of Pentecost June 12, 2016

Prelude Improvisation on “Hyfrydol”

Welcome & Announcements Service of Confession and Absolution Confession P: God’s grace includes the promise and offer of forgiveness. Given the sinful state of our humanity, we would be foolish not to take advantage of this gift. Therefore, we confess our sins and welcome the peace and freedom that comes so completely from the God of our salvation. (Silent Confession)

P: Gracious God, All: We confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our entire being. We have not loved our neighbors as you so graciously have loved us. We have taken advantage of your grace by thinking that we have the license to sin and always can count on your forgiveness. We have tried to justify our own sinfulness by comparing our sins to others and claiming that we are not as bad as other people are. We try to earn your favor by doing the good deeds that you expect of us rather than trusting in your grace to be made righteous in your sight. Forgive us for our failure to trust in your grace and grant us the will to repent of our sins.

Absolution P: By the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, your sins are forgiven and you are forever free from whatever behavior you have brought to this moment in your life. Whatever you do from this moment on, you do so in response to this gracious gift of God and in gratitude for the freedom that we all have in Jesus, our Savior. Go now in God’s peace. C: Amen.

Service of Holy Communion

(Please stand as you are able) Opening Hymn “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” Green Hymnal #551 (Face the cross as it is carried forward) Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 C: And also will you.

Kyrie

Hymn of Praise

3 Prayer of the Day A: Let us pray together: C: God of grace and peace, we delight in the opportunity this day to be reminded of how Jesus so graciously has made our relationship with you right by offering to us the forgiveness of all of our sins. We pray that as you have forgiven us, so may we be willing and able to forgive others in our lives. We know that refusing to do so 4 simply nullifies your grace. Therefore, by the power of your Spirit, grant us the faith and courage to be an extension of your grace and help us to pursue the things that make for your peace in this world. We pray in the name of our Prince of Peace. Amen.

(Please be seated) First Lesson 2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-15 When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she made lamentation for him. When the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased God, and God sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meager fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him." Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, "As God lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity." Nathan said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul; I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more. Why have you despised the word of God, to do what is evil in God’s sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against God." Nathan said to David, "Now God has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned God, the child that is born to you shall die." Then Nathan went to his house. God struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it became very ill.

L: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm “Restore in Us, O God”

5 Second Lesson Galatians 2:15-21 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is justified - not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law. But if, in our effort to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have been found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

L: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God.

6 Gospel Luke 7:36-8:3 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him— that she is a sinner.” Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Teacher,” he replied, “speak.” “A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.” And Jesus* said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources.

7 Hymn of the Day “Great God, Your Love Has Called Us”

8 Affirmation of Faith We believe in God the Giver of Life who created the heavens and the earth and all that exists, whose mercy is endless, and whose presence is eternal. We believe in God, who through Abraham and Sarah, promised to bless all peoples; who through Israel and Judah enacted the covenant of blessing and freedom; who through the prophets proclaimed God’s way of justice and peace; and who through Jesus revealed God’s grace and truth for all eternity. We believe in Jesus who proclaimed the good news of God’s realm and expanded God’s promise of salvation to all people; who healed the sick, cast out demons, and raised people from the dead; who kept the Sabbath day holy, challenged the religious leaders to do the same, and suffered death on the cross on account of his faithfulness to God’s law of love; and who was raised by God from the dead and paved the way for a new age of forgiveness and freedom. We believe in the Holy Spirit who is the promise of new life, the source of our faith, and the one who calls and gathers us together in one communion; who dwells within and among us to be the witness of God’s love in the world; who gives us the power to forgive others as we have been forgiven; and who makes our hearts yearn for God’s justice and peace. Amen.

9 Offertory Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: Creator God, you have provided us with the sustenance of life. Given the inequitable distribution of these resources, we express our gratitude to you by offering to you these fruits of our labor for the ministries of this congregation, the witness of your love in our community, and the freedom of those who are in bondage to the oppression and violence of this world. Bless this bread and fruit of the vine that all who partake of this holy meal will know the freedom that comes with your gift of forgiveness and will act responsibly in faithfulness to your will. We pray in the holy name of Jesus. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving P: God be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts C: We lift them to our God. P: Let us give thanks to our gracious God. C: It is right to give God our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks . . .

10 we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Eucharistic Prayer P: Holy God, source of all grace and truth, endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. Through baptism, you affirmed us as your beloved children and called us to a life of discipleship in the way of Jesus, our Christ.

In order to keep us faithful to this call and support us in our commitment to do your will, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Jesus also took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering Jesus’ baptism, his witness to the love of God, his ministry of salvation, his crucifixion, and his resurrection, we celebrate this holy meal as evidence of his presence in our lives.

11 Through this holy meal, your Spirit is renewed within and among us to empower us to proclaim the good news of your realm and to speak out on behalf of those whose voices have been neglected and stifled by others in this world.

Join our prayers with those of all who have been baptized throughout the centuries and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of Jesus, our Christ, through whom all glory and honor belongs to you, both now and forever.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

If you would like to contribute to OMD, you may do so by using a special offering envelope in the pew, making your check out to ULC, ear- marking it for ODM, and putting your gift in the offering plate, or bringing it to the church office. Thank you for your generous offering.

DROP BY THE ADVOCACY TABLE after the service. This may be your last opportunity to sign two important initiatives: I-1458 increases the state minimum wage; I-1491 temporarily suspends legal access to guns for those in a mental health crisis or who have threatened violence.

THE CARE TEAM MINISTRY AT ULC is being revived in concert with the new long- range plan. Also, as a way of ensuring that the homebound members of our congregation are contacted regularly after Pastor Ron’s departure, we would like to have at least one member of the congregation matched with one of our homebound members in order to maintain this contact. Descriptions of this ministry are available upon request. If you are interested in being a Care Team Minister, please sign up on the Worship Registration form, or talk with Pastor Ron or Katie Saltanovitz for more information.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SERVE REFRESHMENTS on any particular Sunday in July, August, or September, please sign up on the back of the Worship Registration form. Also

15 please indicate if you would prefer to provide refreshments on your own or with someone else. Any dates left open will be filled by people who have signed up for this ministry on the 2016 Time & Talent Commitment form. THE MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR DAVE HAMRO will be on Saturday, June 18 at 11:00 a.m. We remember the Hamro family in our prayers and anticipate this day when we will gather to celebrate Dave’s life.

READY FOR A HIKE? Dustin Wunderlich is working to organize a day hike for church members on Saturday, June 18 to Greider Lakes (off Hwy. 2). The plan is for folks to meet at the church at 8:00 a.m., or to meet at the trailhead around 9:30 a.m. People should plan to bring some lunch to eat at the turnaround point, or if folks are interested we can plan to have a little picnic/barbecue back at the trailhead. If you are interested in going, please sign up on the Worship Registration form.

YOU CAN JOIN IN THE PRIDE PARADE on Sunday, June 26. With the celebration for Pastor Ron in the evening, you still have the opportunity to join a whole contingent of many Lutheran congregations in the annual Pride Parade downtown at 12:00 noon. Depending upon the placement of the Lutheran contingency, the location of where the Lutherans will gather and the time that they will start marching is yet to be determined. If you sign up on the Worship Registration form, we will be sure to let you know about the time and location that the Lutherans will be gathering.

SUNDAY, JUNE 26, IS THE CELEBRATION of Pastor Ron’s 20-year ministry here. There will be a large potluck meal following Pastor Ron’s farewell program which starts at 5:00 p.m. With this event less than a month away, please sign up on the Worship Registration form to bring a main dish, salad, or dessert to share.
