Welcome back!! This semester is going to be a GREAT experience for you! In order for you to obtain the highest level of success, you will need to learn, practice and follow the following rules and procedures. My expectations for student behavior are HIGH!

NOTE: I am requesting a $10 donation to our science classroom for lab materials for this semester. The laboratory experiences provide interest and hands on experience for students. If you are able to make any donation, please make checks payable to Discovery Middle School, and please be sure to include 2 phone numbers and your drivers’ license number.

CLASSROOM AND LAB RULES: 1. Your student handbook will be enforced. 2. Respect other people's space. 3. Follow all directions spoken or written. 4. Use appropriate language. 5. All food, drinks, and gum are to be kept out of the classroom and lab.

CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING CLASSROOM RULES: 1. Warning and/or points will be deducted from Classroom Participant Grade through Classdojo. 2. Break Detention or Lunch Detention 3. Parents will be contacted 4. After school detention 5. Office referral **Please note the severity of the offense will determine the severity of the consequence.

LABS/CLASS PARTICIPATION: Labs are a major component of our science class, as they allow you to apply what you have learned to real-life situations and simulations. We will have a great many opportunities for hands-on exploration throughout the semester. You will be expected to follow all Class and Lab Safety Rules. Class and lab participation is very important in order to succeed in this class. Class and lab participation means taking an active role in your learning, and the learning of your fellow classmates. You must pay attention and be involved in class at all times. Some ways participate in a positive way are:  Make eye contact with your teacher or member of your group.  Positive body language  Involving yourself in the activity or discussion  Staying on task. Most labs will have a lab report that will be completed. The format that you will write the lab report in is on the school website and in your notebook. If you do not follow this format, you will be penalized.

VISITORS: There will be times when another staff member, administrator, or guest speaker will visit our class. I expect every student to be on their best behavior. MAKE-UP WORK DUE TO ABSENCES: In order to earn credit for assignments due to absences, the absence must be excused. All notes and excuses are to be turned in to the front office within three (3) days of the absence. All make-up work for excused absences must be turned in within three school days. If the absence is unexcused, the grade for any and all missed assignments will result in a zero. This is a district policy.

GRADING SYSTEM: Grades will be weighted with tests worth 60% of your overall grade. Test grades include unit tests, laboratory tests, projects and presentations. All tests are open notebook. Do not mistake that to mean those tests are easy. Tests are extremely hard. You will need to review and understand the items in your notebook to make a great grade on the test. Tests are given using the Ipads and computer lab. There is no paper form of the test. I believe in preparing the kids for all the testing that is moving to computers. It also aids in grading, since I can have the grades inputted into the computer the same day in most cases.

The other 40% of your overall grade will include classroom assignments, homework assignments, class and lab participation, classroom quizzes, notebook entries, and laboratory assignments. (Students and parents must sign the Lab Safety Sheet to participate in lab.) If you do not do these types of activities, you will not be able to pass.

You will maintain a Composition Notebook to use during the class. This is what you will be able to use on the test.

Mid-term grades will be sent to parents each 3 weeks.

Communication: You can sign up for remind.com, which sends out text messages for updates from class. 8th Grade text @oliver8 to 256-280-3102 7th Grade text @7oliver to 256-280-3102 Classdojo student behavior website: This will show you what the student is doing in class on a daily basis.
