Topics Discussed
Introductions / Welcome
Social Activities
* Parties : Plans for two this year (Sept, January)
* Happy Hours - Idea for charity happy hours (Dr. Patel from Pediatrics to work with UWHA on first event, perhaps in September, with charity and location to be discussed over email in coming weeks) - Lots of interest in interdepartmental social gatherings
* Potential for social media to facilitate communication of social events (Facebook page) - Potential for an events calendar on the UWresidents website to which people could post departmental activities - Request not to stop emailing (not all people use FB, Twitter) - Role for UWHA in creating/inviting people to group activities outside hospital
Grants * Potential calendar for grants process discussed * Those present asked to promote grants within their departments
Advocacy
* Bike Lockers - HMC getting full - UW : process for obtaining lockers, location of lockers available?
* Parking Shuttle - UW used to have night shuttle, now doesn't?
* Differences in department funding for residents raised by Dr. Grivoyannis - book funds - conference travel - time off - "education leave" - Psych - concern about potential negative consequences if differences brought - vote taken : we will move forward with collecting this information. Dr. Grivoyannis will take the lead in integrating information from department reps: Dr. Van Cleve will develop list of department reps and communicate with Dr. Grivoyannis, who will reach out to departments reps to try to collect information.
* Potential for hospital to help take money out (pre-tax) for educational expenses (licensure / exams), particularly WA license fee for incoming interns
* Role of UWHA in advocacy for community health raised - need to maintain political neutrality discussed - issue will be discussed further on a case by case basis
* Meals
- Description of what happened to lead to last year’s policy change, and where we stand now (Dr. Van Cleve)
Issues Raised - home call - nurses and residents not the same - interns do not qualify for a meal under most circumstances - importance of meals for socialization - night shifts hard on people, especially due to frequent switching between nights and days - effect of hypoglycemia on patient care () - importance of goodwill / morale : is this really expensive - are reimbursements happening on time - issue of 7p-7a being different 7a-7p - as GME believes current system encourages MedHub hours entry, one possibility would be a defined meals plan that was contingent on on-time completion of MedHub duty hours
